Years ago my mother worked for head start and saw it all the time among primarily blacks and more than a few white girls. It wasn’t unusual to have a dozen kids from a half dozen mothers and one father. The father would make the rounds on check day and take his cut from all the mothers.
I’m almost certain it is the same way for Mormons with multiple wives. I read some story about how it was an open secret that the US was paying benefits.

The exact same number as the polygamist Mormons out here in the West. They are well known for having numerous wives and families on the dole.
