Protesters angry at plans to allow Burkina Faso's President Blaise Compaore to extend his 27-year-rule have set fire to parliament.
Correspondents say the city hall and ruling party headquarters are also in flames in the capital, Ouagadougou.
A huge crowd is surging towards the presidential palace and the main airport has been shut.
MPs have suspended a vote on changing the constitution to allow Mr Compaore to stand for re-election next year.
Five people have been killed in the protests, among the most serious against Mr Compaore's rule, reports BBC Afrique's Yacouba Ouedraogo from the capital.
The military fired live bullets as protesters stormed parliament, our correspondent says.

Rights are important, and abusing power is important to confront, but I sure hate to see people destroy property that is part of the national heritage.
It is to be appreciated the buildings that last for hundreds of years, that are the pride of any nation.
Find some way to protest that doesn’t rob the nation of it’s heredity.

The place is a dump ... even by African standards.

Sometimes petty tyrants need to have a healthy fear put into them. Fire is as good a tool as any.
That could be you and me if elections in this country keep getting more and more rigged.

Thank goodness Upper Volta is still peaceful.
There have been some incredible buildings destroyed in some nations. The ornate architecture simply cannot be restored or replaced.
It’s like burning your own home down to protest a high electric bill.
Now I realize the issues are more important here for instance, but the national heritage should not be destroyed to make a point.
Some of those buildings are ancient. They are national treasures. Hell, I think they are treasures and they aren’t even the riches of my own nation.
