Ebola Nurse Who Was Quarantined in NJ Now in Maine
ABC News ^ | 10/28/2014 | By ROBERT F. BUKATY

The nurse who was confined against her will at a New Jersey hospital after treating Ebola patients in West Africa is seeking time to decompress at an undisclosed location in Maine, her lawyer said Tuesday.

Kaci Hickox's partner, a nursing student, has opted to stay away from the University of Maine at Fort Kent to be with her, a university official said. His off-campus home showed no sign of activity Tuesday.

"At this point, he has made a decision he has decided to take a break from campus," said Ray Phinney, associate dean of student life and development. "We don't know exactly when to expect him back," he added.

There was disagreement Tuesday over Hickox's status.

The state of Maine said she agreed to be quarantined, but her lawyer insisted there's no quarantine.

Steve Hyman, one of Hickox's lawyers, said the state should follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines that require only monitoring, not quarantine, for health care workers who show no symptoms after treating Ebola patients.

He said he expected her to remain in seclusion for the "next day or so" while he works with Maine health officials.

There was no immediate clarification from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services or from the governor's office.

Hickox, who volunteered in Africa with Doctors Without Borders, was the first person forced into New Jersey's mandatory quarantine for people arriving at Newark Liberty from three West African countries.

She spent the weekend in a quarantine tent despite her objections over her treatment at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The infectious control tent is not plumbed for sewer. She had a porta-toilet in order to collect potentially infective waste. The only difference between a porta-toilet and a infloor toilet is the flush. I’m not sure if ebola virus is something we want flush, in a city with a sewer system where rats run the pipes.

Kaci herself explained it as a stress temperature.

re: We cannot stand for a government that arbitrarily locks America citizens in quarantine,....

Arbitrarily??? You are kidding me!!!! You do understand the meaning of the word, don’t you? An example of “arbitrarily” would be the government picking a person at random for no reason whatsoever and placing them into quarantine. For this nurse, there were two very definite reasons for concern: She had been around Ebola patients and had an elevated temperature when first tested. Nothing “arbitrary” about that.

here in Tennessee when a Meth house is cleaned up by guys in HazMat suits even the drains have to be cleaned out

you can imagine the drains would be crucial if an Ebola patient was to use the normal sewer system..

I wonder what they did about the Ebola Mans apartment building ???

She may have Ebola. You are naive or ignorant. If she is carrying the virus, it will multiply within her to a measurable quantity to show up when tested. The doctor in NYC was symptom free while carrying the virus, too.

They forced her into a tent with a bucket to poop in!

Army life can be a bitch.

The Army put me in a tent and told me to dig a hole to poop in.

And I did the same thing in the Boy Scouts.

Oh, the Huge Manatee!!!!

re: The needs of the many supersede the rights of one whining, attention seeking, crybaby leftist who WORKED WITH DYING BLEEDING EBOLA PATIENTS.

If it turns out that she is not infected, I predict she will be heralded much in the same way sandra fluke was. She will get job offers from leftist organizations, perhaps even the CDC with that obama loving stooge who is heading it now.

One ignorant/selfish nurse has possibly derailed the mandatory quarantine, potentially jeopardizing the lives and health of countless numbers of people. I haven’t heard any plans by her to otherwise isolate herself from others. What a #@$%.

EBOLA PANIC IN THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT...!!!

Soldiers returning home from Ebola infested African countries are quarantine 21 days in Italy before entering U.S.

430 doctors and nurses died killed by the disease while treating Ebola patients in Africa...

Some African countries put 42 days in quarantine those coming from Ebola countries.

Why are health care workers from Ebola countries not forced to be at least 21 days in quarantine when they return to U.S.A. for the protection of their own families and the country?

If she does have obola, you won’t hear about it. She has already disappeared in Maine.

She was considered high risk for developing ebola because she had active caregiver contact with many who died from it(by her own admission).

I can understand the civil liberty issue. She should have turned around and voluntarily stayed in quarantine in NJ after making her point. That’s what an honorable nurse would do.
She’s an embarrassment to the profession of nursing, along with being a guilty white liberal who values brown lives over white instead of valuing all human life equally. I am ashamed that she calls herself a nurse.

She posted photos of her accomodations in NJ for all her fans to swoon over.
I can tell you that her quarters were no different than most ICUs I’ve worked in, and definitely superior to most in Africa. “She had to bathe from a bucket”. How do you think nurses give patients a bed bath?
As far as “pooping in a bucket”, she had a small upright enclosure that could be zipped closed for privacy and a seating area similar to a bedside commode inside that. A far cry from a bucket. Better than in most ERs, where you’re pooping next to your neighbor(or vice versa)with just a curtain between you.
As far as her lack of symptoms, there was conflicting data about that, and due to her travel/work history, they chose to err on the side of caution.
A wise choice in my book, and one that she has no trouble understanding, I assure you. It just doesn’t fit with her political sensibilities.

It is arbitrary when Chris Christie and Andy Cuomo decide to quarantine people with no symptoms.

Her temp dropped to 98.6 and they kept her in quarantine.

What is your point?

The AM TV news was describing her as a hero. The heroes are the ones who are staying in infected areas, in spite of the risks.

Besides which, heroes don't usually whine about situations that inconvenience them.
