The father of a La Plata High School student has been barred from the school grounds after officials said he threatened to disrupt the school environment.
Kevin Wood was issued a no-trespass order last week after a telephone call with La Plata High Vice Principal Shannon Morris on Thursday. Wood called to air complaints regarding his daughter’s world history assignment that asked students to examine elements of the Islamic religion.
Morris and La Plata High Principal Evelyn Arnold reported to the Charles County Public Schools central office that Wood in his phone call had threatened to upset the school environment in some way Monday, according to school spokeswoman Katie O’Malley-Simpson. O’Malley-Simpson declined to elaborate on what threats Wood had made.
If the trespass order is ignored, police could be called and have the violator removed.
“We don’t take that lightly,” said O’Malley-Simpson. “We have a lot of students, and safety comes first. We don’t allow disruptions at the schools, especially if we’re forewarned of them.”
Wood, a former corporal with the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was enlisted for eight years, said in an interview Monday afternoon outside of the school system’s central office that he did not wish for his daughter, a junior at La Plata, to learn the Islamic religion, a faith he does “not believe in,” he said.

I’m guessing the teacher printed the questions off the net, handed it to the kids to “study”, and went back to on-line shopping.

Muslims believe Mohammad was a prophet. They also believe Jesus was a prophet. Does the school teach about Jesus’ life?

He needs to approach the school principle with a law suit.
At the risk of being slammed, I’d say it’s important for children to learn a few basic facts about Islam within the context of history, and that this can theoretically be done without proselytizing for Islam or whitewashing Islam.

My primary subject was Life Science, but I was required to teach a world civilization class also.
The text (Glencoe)was actually pretty good. They set aside several chapters on Judaisms, Christianity, and Islam. Even did a focus on the Reformation.
Charles County is the same place where the Board of Ed. voted to not name a school after Navy Diver Robert D. Stethem, the beating victim of terrorists on that TWA flight, from 1985, I think.
He should inform the school that if he is not permitted on school grounds his daughter will no longer attend the school.

OTOH, when you are as old as I am (80), a target-rich environment is preferable...The more that I can take with me, the happier I go to ground temperature...
I read my son’s a few years aqo and it was practically an Islam proselytizinq pamphlet.
