NEW YORK (AP) The gulf between politicians and scientists over Ebola widened on Sunday as the nation's top infectious-disease expert warned that the mandatory, 21-day quarantining of medical workers returning from West Africa is unnecessary and could discourage volunteers from traveling to the danger zone.
Late Sunday night, the governors of New York and New Jersey stressed separately that the policies allowed for home confinement for medical workers who have had contact with Ebola patients if the workers show no symptoms. They will receive twice-daily monitoring from health officials.
The emphasis on home confinement was at odds with the widely criticized treatment of a nurse returning from Sierrra Leone who was forcibly quarantined is a New Jersey hospital isolation unit even though she said had no symptoms and tested negative for Ebola.

Political correctness will kill us all.
I think what the intellectual guys are thinking....if we were talking of a hundred, or thousand....maybe it’d be manageable. Beyond that, I have serious doubts that the nation has any resources to match ten-thousand people who need quarantine. Just go look at Atlanta, and if you ordered 1,000 locals into quarantine camp. What kind of nut-cases, or whackos would you have to sleep in a cot next to?
That is the idea
Now might be a good time to reopen Ellis Island
The truly dedicated will go and BE RESPONSIBLE ABOUT IT!!!!
Home quarantine doesn’t work.
Remember that “news personality” in NJ who was out and about when she was supposedly under quarantine?
That’s right; she should be in jail.
Governor Christie knows that if NJ’s already-horrible perception gets any worse, he may as well close up shop. If NJ can’t protect employers and taxpayers, they’ll soon have neither.
I think so too
Bowing to the Whitehouse, as usual.
Well. Okay then. Home Quarantine. WITH TWO ARMED GUARDS AT THE FRONT DOOR (and rear, if there is one). Same difference, at least it won’t cost as much.
If there are armed guards at the door it will.
She was under an ordered quarantine as well I believe.
They should stop going on the honor system, if any American DIES from Ebola contracted in the US it’s too many.
THey should hire armed guards outside, if they leave, shoot on sight.
...as proclaimed by who(m)?
It was a “voluntary quarantine” (which is absurd).
Now there is pressure from Obama on the governors of both NJ and NY to stop ordering quarantines; I guess Obama figures anything to get the economy moving in the northeast will maintain the illusion that we are in a “recovery”.
Somebody has to bolster the healthcare sector with sick people...
Dragging a virus spewing victim to a building packed with people too sick to flee is a recipe for disaster!
Posts guards. Tape/rope off the quarantine apt/house.
Put the neighbors on check and watch status.
Send in properly protected care workers with food medicine body bags and bleach as needed.
Why not use a fashionable ankle bracelet?
How about quarantining them overnight while they test them for Ebola? I’d think if it can be ruled out for this nurse already, they should be able to rule it out—or in—for other returning workers.
