I must admit, the one thing I miss from the Cold War was the Shortwave stations. Radio Moscow always was good for the entertainment value, if nothing else.

I think clandestine radio has continued to Cuba.

http://www.dxing.com/clandest.htm

Though many shortwave outfits have stopped.

“This is London” and “The World Service of the BBC”.

I think the BBC cut down on broadcasts but still provides some.

http://www.short-wave.info/

There were a number of Christian stations, Family Radio apparently has stopped its shortwave.

I think Radio Nippon and Radio Taipei were still on the air in the past few years.

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/english/radio/shortwave/ (Japan)

Radio Taipei or Taiwan stopped broadcasting to North America because their North American relay-station, Family Radio closed down.

Most of the flamethrower propaganda stations are gone, but the clandestine spooks are still out there.

You could get a lot of sporting events on AFRTS that you couldn’t hear anywhere else.

I heard station out of Iraq, 6,7 years back.
They were using a legit format but were sending info to fighters to resist Iranians

I actually got some pen-pals through the radio, actually the pen-pals (from parts of the world including Cuba) I got were from one of the Christian stations.

Maybe it was HCJB, I know it was from Ecuador:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HCJB

The article says they stopped in 2009.

Family Radio was Harold Kemping’s outfit I’m pretty sure who got heavily criticized, rightfully so, for predicting the end of the world. I think they were the one’s broadcasting from Ocheekobbe. (as indeed they were http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WYFR )

“The station built new transmitters in Okeechobee, Florida in 1977.”

Back with the DSL and all that, fascinating.

I listened to Radio Habana, I may not like what they stood for but when they were going to broadcast, they’d have those notes sounding like they were off a xylophone or something, the notes from Guantanamera.

Exactly, a lot of good shows to hear. I recall Radio Deutsche Welle (said like Doycha-Vella basically) and Radio Nederlands as well.

Radio Nippon/Japan would have Japanese language lessons, kind of fun.

I was pricing some short wave radios, some real nice ones over $300. Maybe at some point in the future, I will get one. I do have a little Emerson SW Radio.

Tirana, obviously I think Albania.

Maybe I’m embarrassing myself in saying this, I got a DSL card from Radio Habana Cuba. The stamp metering on the mail envelope from the US Post Office read “We meet the challenge”. So make of that whatever one wants to.

My old Sony 7600 is one of my prized possessions.

You mean a Sony SW-7600? Yep, damn' fine SWL radio in a very small package. Have one, bought it brand spanking new back in (1990?) just in time to listen to Desert Storm.

Now I'm an Amateur Radio guy and can listen on anything from my old Yaesu FT-101ZD, my Kenwood 940SAT or my newer Kenwood TS-2000 with my fan Dipole @ 50'.

Granted there's the advantage of being licensed to transmit in the 1.8 - 30mhz bands. :-)

Did I mention my old Radio Shack DX-160 -- the KING of SWL Radio's being in perfect working condition and having the most sensitive receive of any SW Radio I've ever had? It just rocks.

I’m not wired for sound on this computer, perhaps I will hear in the near future. I see youtube has some RHC there.

☺ wish Rush would buy some air.

I discovered Limbaugh in 1992 or 93 because at the time, he was on a shortwave station: WRNO in New Orleans. I was living in northern Ontario at the time and it was impossible to receive American radio on AM or FM.

These days when I want to listen in, I do it via the Net, of course, but my Grundig YB-400 is still sitting on my desk.

Always figured Rush noodled with the idea, but he landed on AM.
