-A HazMat team was sent in to sterilize the apartment of NYC Ebola patient Craig Spencer on Friday
-The team spent almost the entire day in the building
-They left with sealed barrels, but not wearing any sort of protective gear
The preparedness of New York City officials and workers to deal with Ebola has once again left much to be desired as a HazMat team sent in to decontaminate the apartment of Craig Spencer, the first person to contract the deadly virus in the city, was seen leaving his apartment with sealed barrels, but wearing no protective gear.
The men were photographed exiting the apartment without gloves, face masks, or anything else to protect them as they loaded the barrels with possibly contaminated goods into the back of a truck.
In fact, one man had something dangling out of his mouth as he carried two barrels out

they didn’t clean because it wasn’t exposed to body fluids said some authority.

B-b-but Westerners are so much smarter than those backwards Africans. Disease can NEVER spread here. Why, every one of us washes our hands every single time that we use the bathroom. We’re *educated*! /s
I used to care for disabled men. One of them had hepatitis from a blood transfusion.
We were *very* careful.
Those people are accidents looking for a place to happen.
You really think hosing down was going on inside the building? On the exteriors of the barrels as well?
I take it those who work in such jobs are at the low end of the spectrum for concern about germs and such.
Are these the best and brightest people that NYC has to offer to fight this killer disease? New Yorkers in authority are morons playing with the lives of millions.
Yes, it is and don't forget to look for the union label. Unions make us strong./sarc/

Clipboard Man doesn’t need any hot wrinkly Haz Mat suit, he is protected by virtue of his title.

Ebola has a very, VERY, short survival time outside of the human body. It’s reckless, but very doubtful any are infected.
With a small risk that one of these morons might actually catch the disease.
The proper course of action would be to ignore the apartment, let the occupants serve out their quarantine / illness, and then let them sort out the apartment.
Yep. Unlike the cops that tossed their stuff in a street can.
My thoughts too - it would be worse to be wearing the suits on the way out than to have decontaminated and put them in the barrels. But, many here are so eager to jump the shark that they put the Fonz to shame...
Not knowing whether the containers were “hermetically sealable” If one were to give NY the benefit of the doubt, it could be that after the affected items were disinfected/gathered and sealed in the containers, the workers felt it okay to remove the PPE.
It’s a BIG stretch seeing as how videos I’ve seen about DECON involve boot baths, shower sprays, assistance of others to remove PPE, etc.
There’s no evidence for fomite transmission.
I would have worn the gear, but it’s probably going to be OK.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Thanks for the ping!
