Goats are shrinking because of climate change, researchers warn

They appear to be shrinking in size as they react to changes in climate, according to new research from Durham University.

The researchers studied the impacts of changes in temperature on the body size of Alpine Chamois, a species of mountain goat, over the past 30 years.

To their surprise, they discovered that young Chamois now weigh about 25 per cent less than animals of the same age in the 1980s.

In recent years, decreases in body size have been identified in a variety of animal species, and have frequently been linked to the changing climate.

However, the researchers say the decline in size of Chamois observed in this study is striking in its speed and magnitude.

The research, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council is published in the journal Frontiers in Zoology.

I knew it, I knew it.

Say anything about goats, and someone will associate muzzies with them.

Having cared for goats on and off through the years, they are useful for one thing and one thing only...

You are missing out on the milk, yogurt and cheese.

No, I’m not missing a thing. I cannot STAND the smell of goat. I cannot abide the taste of goat cheese - and I’ll eat just about ANYTHING that doesn’t eat me first, LOL!

The only other thing I like about goats is goat milk soap - but cow or sheep milk is just as luxurious. :)

I’m trying. Really, I am. It’s just that they were my CHORE and RESPONSIBILITY growing up, and now that I’m a Grown Up, I don’t have to do that anymore! :)

Let’s talk Chickens. I think THEY are Nature’s Most Useful Critter. Ever.

Fried Chicken. Feathers for tying Trout flies. Eggs. Alarm Clocks. Companionship. *LOVE*

It is Darwinianism at its purist. The larger goats are easily found and removed from the gene pool. The smaller ones evade the Moose Limbs that are using them for breeding purposes and food. The smaller ones also survive better on the disappearing habitat.

I someone would compile two lists of links.

List 1: Links to stories explaining why the temperature hasn’t changed yet, even though the AGW forces are building up behind the scenes to start changing temperature eventually. (There are hundreds and thousands of those stories out there.)

List 2: Links to stories claiming that this or that phenomenon that we can observe TODAY is directly caused by rising temperatures (that actually haven’t started rising yet, please see List 1).

Domestic animals like goats don't get to choose which goat they get to mate, their owners do.

If they are getting smaller, it's because breeders are selecting for smaller animals.

How do you think pigmy goats came about?

There was no such thing as pigmy goats fifty years ago.

People like them.

I must concur, for the same reason you stated.

The only good goat is a dressed and cooked YOUNG goat.

” The research, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council...”

I’m sure a very impartial organization.

I'd bet the owners of today are less experienced in which Billy to keep and which Nanny to allow too breed. Many things factor in including supplementing feed, how often the Nanny's are allowed to breed, keeping new bloodlines in the herds, etc.

In general though many breeders and owners are purposely going for shorter but stockier goats. You can cross a Nubian {taller and more slender} with a Saanen {shorter but more stocky} the goat will be slightly shorter and more stocky. Smaller goats are easier to deal with. Goats like a Nubian or Saanen if not debudded {dehorned} can kill a child and seriously harm an adult. Goats can be very violent and aggressive animals.

I would like to have a baby miniature goat, a “dwarf goat” as a house pet. But that’s just me ...
