The NYTimes is Worried About “Orthodox Jewish Beggars”

Recently, The New York Times Magazine had an article entitled “The Beggars Of Lakewood”, which I found to be a distorted depiction of the Hareidi-religious Jewish community of Lakewood, New Jersey.

The article describes how the people of Lakewood do not turn anyone vetted as needy away. It could—and should—have been called “The Generous Givers of Lakewood.” Because this is a community of Torah scholars who, barring a few, are far from wealthy.

Instead, it focuses on those asking for funds. The piece uses the hackneyed stereotype of Jews as money-grubbing beggars—replete with a picture of a black hat surrounded by dollar bills. Gross and intolerant. …

On the one hand, the Jews are beggars. On the other hand, the Jews are rich.
It kind of makes you think that some folks just hate the Jews ...

I’m not crazy about welfare going to able bodied and minded Americans, but they would never ridicule a Muslim or any other welfare recipient like this. If they are able to work, they should all pay their way in life and not suck off the work of others.

One of my brothers was a cable installation guy in the mid 90’s for Comcast. He used to tell me he made a days pay in a 2 hour service call in “ tips” if he parked the company van out of sight in that hood.

To this day , he laughs about some of the guys appetite for free porn for a c note, warranty not included.

The Times is worried about everything Jews do. Where they live, now charitable practices. It's worth reading the article (not suggesting everyone doesn't) and the underlying article in the Times, The Beggars of Lakewood. The Times appears to be bent out of shape because some Jews are taking advantage of the charitable instincts of other Jews and Jewish charities. I'm sure the Times would prefer government rather than charitable involvement.

Might note my post 6. My reaction was the same as yours before reading the article. But there’s no mention of government programs, they’re upset about Jewish charities providing for Jews, and “beggars” legally registering to go door to door in Lakewood, telling their story, and asking for charity.
