The US Army was never able to develop anything like the Shilka. They tried with the Sergeant York system which was an unmitigated disaster.

I agree with you.

I’ve read that as is usual they tried to put to damn much stuff into the Sgt. York weapon system. Pick a task and work on it to make the system as good as it can be for that task. Then and only then do you look to see what else it can be made to do.

Yes and no. The M45 Quadmount, while not really a self-propelled AA vehicle, was nevertheless used as described above. Up through Korea and Vietnam, it was extremely effective as an anti-personnel weapon.
