Is it me, or does the invasion of Leyte seem an anticlimax after Normandy?

Maybe not just you. I am currently working on the news of November 14. The story on Leyte is on page 4. OTOH, since that is the day my father landed on Leyte, my personal interest is mounting.

This region was devastated in 2013 by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded. Tacloban, the capital now in U.S. hands, was particularly hard hit.
"Halsey's Typhoon" will play a role in the Philippines campaign, but that is still in the future.

How many women today have the character of Ala Gertner and how many men would want a wife like that?

As to the first part of your question, I hope we don’t have to find out.

Time & circumstances sometimes call for extraordinary responses from more-or-less ordinary people.
When Ala Gertner was murdered in 1944, she was certainly not the same young girl who married a handsome young fellow years earlier.
The same is true of tens of millions of others who fought, died or just survived what is today (thankfully) an almost unbelievable war.
