Generally left-leaning ice-cream company Ben and Jerrys has refused to rename its Hazed and Confused hazelnut ice-cream flavor despite cries from activists that its insensitive to hazing victims.
It didnt make sense for us to change the name, Ben and Jerrys spokesman Sean Greenwood told Bloomberg. We named it after a pop-culture reference.
Greenwood said the company did not see anything about the flavor name that even inferred [sic] hazing.
But thats not how Lianna and Brian Kowiak of Tampa feel, who say they were shocked and dismayed to see an ice-cream flavor with that name.
The company completely avoided and didnt take into consideration what are the unintentional implications of this chosen name, Brian said.
Lianne and Brian had a son, Harrison, die of a head injury during a fraternity hell week in 2008.
Anti-hazing activist Hank Nuwer of StopHazing.org also criticized the flavor and pressed people to contact the company and complain.
Greenwood said Internet responses to the flavor name were mostly positive.
I’m with Ben & Jerry’s on this one - don’t care for their politics but the political correctness surrounding their ice cream is absurd.
I like the label for hazelnut and chocolate core.
“Nice to see that even a “left-leaning” business can stand up to a more or less random person who thinks they have an equal — or greater than — say in how the business is run as the owners have. “
Indeed. Glad to see ANY business stand up to the grievance industry.
Seriously.
Don’t eat much ice cream, but I hear theirs is good.
Disagree with their politics, but admire them for not retreating.
Some woman complained about Heinz’ midget or dwarf pickles; can’t remember which one.
Good for Ben and Jerry’s.
It is about time someone told the “Offended” what they can do with their offendedness.
Ban the word “haze” and all it’s forms, from the English language, because this couple would be shocked and dismayed.
Just what is a hazing “victim” anyway?
They walk into these situations willingly do they not?
IMO it’s ok to be an anti-hazing activist, but he’s being over-sensitive here. Like the old saying: when you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Same here. Don’t like their politics.....but, enough of these bullies.
Wha-Wha, I’m a victim look at me look at me. What the hell is this country coming to. It’s not like it was named hazed and deceased.
The NR comments suggested that the song “Purple Haze” is equally “offensive”, and that B&J’s “Chunky Monkey” slanders both overweight people and an entire race. :-)
There’s hazing where you end up with mustard in your hair, naked in the street, or vomiting off the frat-house balcony. Then there’s hazing where you end up in the hospital or the morgue. Nobody can reasonably argue that those would be usual or legitimate outcomes or that the victim should have expected that to happen.
Now if they’d just show how open minded they are by marketing “Concealed Carrymel Crunch”.
This could be a hit?
Been Hazed and Confused with this ice-cream review
Shocked and dismayed that the stuff tastes like glue
Lots of people talking few of them know
Insensitive brand-names make liberal heads explode!
Much obliged — it was “midget” pickles, but not Heinz.

A small company buckled; Vlasic pointed to USDA regulations and told her to shove off.
Worth repeating! Beautiful!
