Irresponsible 'Education'

Slavery certainly has its place among the horrors of humanity. But our "educators" today, along with the media, present a highly edited segment of the history of slavery. Those who have been through our schools and colleges, or who have seen our movies or television miniseries, may well come away thinking that slavery means white people enslaving black people. But slavery was a worldwide curse for thousands of years, as far back as recorded history goes.

Over all that expanse of time and space, it is very unlikely that most slaves, or most slave owners, were either black or white. Slavery was common among the vast populations in Asia. Slavery was also common among the Polynesians, and the indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere enslaved other indigenous peoples before anyone on this side of the Atlantic had ever seen a European.

More whites were brought as slaves to North Africa than blacks brought as slaves to the United States or to the 13 colonies from which it was formed. White slaves were still being bought and sold in the Ottoman Empire, decades after blacks were freed in the United States.

Wikipedia has a halfway decent history including the following. Somehow I doubt that any of that appears in the schoolbooks.

The Transatlantic slave trade peaked in the late 18th century, when the largest number of slaves were captured on raiding expeditions into the interior of West Africa. These expeditions were typically carried out by African kingdoms, such as the Oyo empire (Yoruba), the Ashanti Empire,[118] the kingdom of Dahomey,[119] and the Aro Confederacy.[120] Europeans rarely entered the interior of Africa, due to fierce African resistance. The slaves were brought to coastal outposts where they were traded for goods. A significant portion of African Americans in North America are descended from Mandinka people.[121] Through a series of conflicts, primarily with the Fulani Jihad States, about half of the Senegambian Mandinka were converted to Islam while as many as a third were sold into slavery to the Americas through capture in conflict.

According to Robert Davis between 1 million and 1.25 million Europeans were captured by Barbary pirates and sold as slaves in North Africa and Ottoman Empire between the 16th and 19th centuries.

The Arab slave trade lasted more than a millennium.[144] As recently as the early 1960s, Saudi Arabia's slave population was estimated at 300,000.[145] Along with Yemen, the Saudis abolished slavery only in 1962.[146] Slaves in the Arab World came from many different regions, including Sub-Saharan Africa (mainly Zanj),[71] the Caucasus (mainly Circassians),[147] Central Asia (mainly Tartars), and Central and Eastern Europe (mainly Saqaliba).

Slavery continues to be common in some African countries. In Mauritania, the last country to abolish slavery (in 1981),[190] it is estimated that up to 600,000 men, women and children, or 20% of the population, are enslaved with many used as bonded labour.[191][192][193] Slavery in Mauritania was criminalized in August 2007.[194] (although slavery as a practice was legally banned in 1981, it was not a crime to own a slave until 2007).[195] Although many slaves have escaped or have been freed since 2007, as of 2012, only one slave-owner had been sentenced to serve time in prison.[196]

Slavery is only about delivering the black vote to the Dems. It’s a story ie, a narrative.

And, just like the reason obam won’t won’t stop incoming flights from Ebolaland, he can’t admit that folks coming into this country could be carrying disease or be criminals - so he won’t close our southern border either.

Buried deep in Mr Sowell’s column, I found what just might be the answer to the United States’ race problem(s).

“If those individuals who feel aggrieved could sell their American citizenship to eager buyers from around the world and leave, everybody would probably be better off. Those who leave would get not only a substantial sum of money — probably $100,000 or more — they would also get a valuable dose of reality elsewhere.”

De-fund 95% of welfare and other income redistribution plans and offer each recipient a hundred grand to renounce their citizenship and leave, never to return.
Cheaper and much more cost effective.

as he can possibly get.

The Romans did not have any contact with the Slavs —who were living further into European Russia at the time. What are the Balkans were populated by peoples such as the Dacians (Rumania) Illyrians (most of former Yugoslavia & Albania) and Thracians (Bulgaria) The closest surviving linguistic descendant of these folks are today’s Albanians. What is Ukraine today, was populated by people called Scythian or Sarmatians—related linguistically to the Iranians. The Slavic people came into northern Greece around the late 5th century—probably pushed west and south by Attila & Co.— there were other Asiatic groups that followed Attila—Magyars for one. Eastern Europe definitely by the late 600s Bohemia, most of Poland Russia Ukraine and Balkans. They absorbed the previous people. Slav in their own language means something like truth or belief eg pravoslav= Orthodox—right believing No connection with Romans maybe early Italian borrowed it at a later date
schiavo in Italian means slave.

Try to get black students to accept that whites were once enslaved in large numbers. Even Americans were involved. Stephen Decateur’s expedition against Tripoli aimed to free American sailor taken by the Moors. They also freed many European slaves.

NO doubt in my mind that your doubts are justified. Thhe purpose of liberals is is make us feel bad about out treatment of minorities. We hear a lot about “The Trail of Tears,” the carrying off of the Cherokees.” but no more do we hear about the fate of the Acadians, the French inhabitants of the Maritime provinces, two thirds of whole were deported by the British after the French sand Indian War, half of them dying along the way. I doubt that any high school students today have read “Evangeline,” long a favorite of high school texts.

You forget “New Rome,” Constantinople, which became the new political capital in 330 A.D.

One could say, that enslavement of one or several persons to the will of another more powerful dominant person, has pretty much been the most common of traits throughout the evolution of this phenomenon known as “civilization” among humanity. In fact, one could say that is pretty nearly the one thread that has not materially diminished over many thousands of years of written and known history.

The institution of slavery is dressed up with different names, of course, and by no means was it only “whites” who were the most important or most numerous slaveowners, just as the most numerous or most oppressed slaves were not “blacks”. There were “bond servants”, and serfs, who were considered to be part of the real estate, and quite widespread in the world today, something the Islamic belief system calls “Dhimmi”, those who have submitted, upon the threat of death, to become servants of the Noble Islamic Gentlemen.

Part of the booty of warfare was the taking of slaves, and there were far more numerous wars, most of which are unrecorded in history, in small localities, and across wide swathes of adjacent kingdoms. Slaves were taken as their punishment for being soldiers of opposing armies, having surrendered, and not having the good grace to die for their allegiances. The wives and children of the conquered tribes were exploited for their sexual and menial labor capabilities, often dying of the privations they underwent, and not subject to any safeguards normally provided to the esteemed members of the victorious side in combat.

Slaves had and have no rights, period. Their continued existence is purely at the whim of the slaveholder, who normally saw no restrictions on his right to enjoy and use the slave in any manner he thought fitting at the moment.

A new and sometimes faltering experiment was undertaken, beginning in the latter part of the 18th Century, in which the old feudal overlord system of managing large tracts of land was set aside, and the new notion of “all men are created equal in the eyes of God”, began to take hold.

Prominent in this belief was the faith there IS a God, and from this basic axiom, all the other explanations of just what a “man” is, follows logically from that premise. The God-given rights of “life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness” were written into the very fabric of this new experiment, and over time, the definition of “Pursuit of happiness” came to mean enjoyment the fruits of enterprise and prudent living, that is, the possession of wealth and goods.

Classic Slavery is still a big time industry, or rather a low level perennial phenomenon in the ME and the Sudan that has revived to be a big time industry.

I have a college degree in History. But I don’t need a degree to know that if you walk the Earth you are descended from both slaves and slave holders. This is our common history.

Basil II, Boulgaroktonos the Bulgar slayer.

I believe large numbers of Slavs were captured by the Byzantines in the 9th-11th centuries, many of whom were probably sold as slaves to the Italians across the Adriatic.

Slavery itself died out in Western Europe after these last episodes, or, to be more precise, after final the Christianization of the Slavic peoples. I think the Teutonic Knights were also (in)famous for forcing captured pagan Prussians and Lithuanians into a slave-like serfdom on their estates.

You will never hear any of these liberals, socialists and communists even mention that. According to these misanthropes, only white people enslave other people.
