Truth in advertising. Also, they say the food is always good!

The Hague machine in Jersey City is mentioned today. They dominated New Jersey Democratic politics in the day.

One of my daughters dated the grandson of a New Jersey judge who worked against the corrupt machine. He was still alive and I got to talk to him about the War.

He resigned his judgeship to join the Army. Eventually the Army figured out how to use him by assigning him to the European Civil Affairs Division (ECAD). Their detachments will govern German towns and other subdivisions after the allies take them. Nobody knew how to deal with them, so the detachments just independently floated behind the combat units that now are poised to invade Germany. His detachment will be in Belgium in December 1944, when we'll hear more about him.

Very interesting. It’s been very interesting see the politics of the 1940s and how they connect to our issues today.

“U.S.A.: The epic book, “Forever Amber”, written by Kathleen Windsor, is first published today. Although the book was very popular among women between the ages of 12 and 24, it was considered scandalous to be seen reading it; a reaction that lasted at least another 30 years.”

Hmmm...this would put the book in the time range of my wife, sisters and sister in law growing up, one of whom, in particular, clearly attempted to mimic the protagonist of the novel (mercifully not my wife)!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forever_Amber_(novel)

Plot

Forever Amber tells the story of orphaned Amber St. Clare, who makes her way up through the ranks of 17th century English society by sleeping with and/or marrying successively richer and more important men, while keeping her love for the one man she could never have. The novel includes portrayals of Restoration fashion, including the introduction and popularization of tea in English coffeehouses and the homes of the fashionably rich; politics; and public disasters, including the plague and the Great Fire of London.

Critical reception

While many reviewers “praised the story for its relevance, comparing Amber’s fortitude during the plague and fire to that of the women who held hearth and home together through the blitzes of World War II”, others condemned it for its blatant sexual references.[2] Fourteen U.S. states banned the book as pornography. The first was Massachusetts, whose attorney general cited 70 references to sexual intercourse, 39 illegitimate pregnancies, 7 abortions, and “10 descriptions of women undressing in front of men” as reasons for banning the novel.[1] Winsor denied that her book was particularly daring, and said that she had no interest in explicit scenes. “I wrote only two sexy passages,” she remarked, “and my publishers took both of them out. They put in ellipses instead. In those days, you know, you could solve everything with an ellipsis.”[1]

In the small-print communiques, there is a fascinating sentence in the German report, in the Aachen paragraph, an allegation at once unprecedented, yet too trivial to likely be a misinformation op, so I wonder if there might be an untold story there:

Thirty Americans deserted to our troops.

This is not a routine report of POWs being taken.

On page 8 of the NYTs pages there is a blurb about Joe Kennedy and his son Edward Kennedy. I thought this was about “the Kennedys” until I checked Ted Kennedy’s wiki page and he would not have been old enough to be in WW II. He did serve during the Korean conflicy, albeit in Paris France.

Strange there was another Joe Kennedy, father of Ed Kennedy.

From above: The U.S. First Army is to cross the Rhine in the Cologne area between 1 and 5 November. The U.S. Ninth Army, after covering the north flank of the First Army while it is pushing to the Rhine, is to help First Army envelop and clear the Ruhr.

I looked up Bonn on Wiki and found this preview: During World War 2, Bonn acquired military significance because of its strategic location on the Rhine River, which formed a natural barrier to easy penetration into the German heartland from the west. The Allied ground advance into Germany reached Bonn on 7 March 1945, and the US 1st Infantry Division captured the city during the battle of 8–9 March 1945.

Sounds like Eisenhower’s plans did not quite work out.

Also, where his the Ninth Army been? I thought they were below the Third Army which means they had to move back and about 100 miles north to get to the left of the first.
