Ebola Scare Sends Caribbean Cruise Ship Back Home Oct 17, 2014 By MEGHAN KENEALLY
PHOTO: Jeremy Malone saw 30 to 40 crew members with buckets of disinfectant who were lined up on along his hallway as they prepared to clean the ship
The presence of a woman who helped care for an Ebola patient who died has left a Caribbean cruise ship unable to dock at foreign tourist ports and is now heading back to Texas.
One passenger said the announcement of the woman's presence has created "utter panic" on the Carnival Magic cruise ship, while others remained outwardly unfazed, sunbathing by the outdoor pool.
"People are scared, passenger Jon Malone told ABC News as the ship was waiting miles off shore from Cozumel, Mexico. "Ive seen people crying.
The chaos started this morning when there was an announcement on the ships intercom saying "that someone who worked in the lab who handled the person in Dallass blood was on the ship, Jons brother and fellow passenger Jeremy Malone told ABC. The cruise line said the woman is in isolation on board the ship.
"You're using the same buffet line as someone else, the same waiters, the folks that clean the state rooms. If someone was cleaning their state room and cleaned yours right after, the exposure that you have there to elevators..." he said. "It's very tight quarters and a lot of interaction. It's really difficult to control any type of virus that's on a cruise ship. It's like a floating petri dish. It spreads very rapidly."

If you read “The Innocents Abroad” it was noted that Mark Twain’s cruise ship was not allowed to disembark at a number of ports because of a Cholera epidemic. The ship would stop for fuel and then had to leave port. This was back in 1867.
carribean need to sue this idiot, if that’s what it will take for people to start taking this seriously.
“Ebola scare” is the new gravitas.
Why did the ship announce that they had a lab worker on board that had handled Duncan’s samples? Why wouldn’t they have just let them stay in their cabin, under self-quarantine?
Why was Kerry talking about a medivac plane landing in Belize for the self-quarantined passengers, if she is perfectly fine?
Why this big fuss? A cruise line never wants this kind of publicity. Why would they invite it?
Something is not adding up.
Ack— sorry for the double-post.
ONE man got into the U.S. with Ebola. HUNDREDS of people at risk, inconvenienced, terrified.
Let’s send 4000 troops to Africa to bring back Ebola!
The thing that’s hardest to believe is that there are still ANY people who don’t understand that Obola is trying to kill as many Americans as possible.
Sue "idiots" - like Obama?
Regards,
No it’s not adding up, she’s probably symptomatic & the cruise line doesn’t want to let that out.
I don’t get it. IS SHE SHOWING SYMPTOMS or not? Is she a nurse that took care of Duncan or a lab worker? Every story I have read about this cruise ship says different things. Why can’t the story get straight?
They had to announce. It was already news and known. They had been denied port in Belize.
“”My decision had been made. The window of opportunity if it had ever existed had slammed shut,” Barrow told Kerry, according to two Belizean government officials.”
Seems like Mr. Barrow is not willing to let US election politics interfere with his responsibility to keep his country as safe as possible.
“Why this big fuss? A cruise line never wants this kind of publicity. Why would they invite it? Something is not adding up.”
Perhaps the rumors were even worse, as in a passenger already having Ebola - but I don’t know any more than what’s in the article.
There was all sorts of drama being reported last night along about this time. The report I’ve seen stated that the woman was showing symptoms, and at some point boarded the ship’s tender along with her husband to go to shore to seek treatment. There was reportedly an air ambulance awaiting at the airport. They were not allowed to come ashore though, then the cruise ship itself refused to allow them to board, effectively stranding them in the ship’s tender. There never was any indication that they were allowed to return to the ship.
The ship was not allowed to port at Belize, and they had to make an announcement as to the reason why. Also, it was reported that either she or her husband had bragged to other passengers about her handling vials of Ebola, which became rapidly known among the passengers, then she started showing symptoms. The ship was also not allowed to port in Mexico.
It’s a bizarre set of circumstances to a bizarre decision, taking a cruise, given that two of her coworkers have been infected. People can talk about ignorance and panic among the general public all they want, but the ignorance and arrogance of certain medical professionals has been stunning. It’s as if they don’t quite grasp the seriousness of the situation themselves.
I think our government has started a big cover up of all the Ebola news. They didnt anticipate how this would ruin the Rats election.
More selfishness than anything, and they all should be charged with a crime for being out in public at all!
I find it ironic that Mexico is barring this ship entry while the US is taking care of its sick citizens.
Seventy-five workers from the Ebola hospital in Dallas have been sent home for quarantine.
This is from ONE patient.
