A Russian container ship carrying hundreds of tons of fuel was drifting without power in rough seas off British Columbia's northern coast Friday, a scenario a nearby First Nation community described as its "worst fear."
The Canadian Forces' joint rescue coordination center in Victoria said the Russian carrier Simushir lost power late Thursday night off Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, as it was making its way from Washington state to Russia.
Canadian Navy Lt. Paul Penderghast said the ship was drifting nine nautical miles from shore, though he said it was largely maintaining that position.
"It is drifting, but it's drifting parallel to shore," Penderghast said.
Acting Canadian Sub. Lt. Ron MacDougall said the Simushir, which is about 440 feet long, was carrying "a range of hydrocarbons, mining materials and other related chemicals." That included 400 tons of bunker oil and 50 tons of diesel.
The ship had 11 crew members on board, though a Cormorant helicopter was dispatched to rescue the captain, who was injured.

Don’t they have an anchor?
“A Russian container ship carrying hundreds of tons of fuel “
Ran outta gas?
Probably so but possible with no power it cannot be returned on board. Most anchor when let out need power to be set and some of the chain returned on board to control the drift. But with no power this might be a problem. Most anchor chain release requires a breaking to control speed and setting.
Thanks for the explanation.
“Dont they have an anchor?”
They don’t have a lot of anchor chain. They would have to be in shallow water to anchor.
A ship of fools?
The effect of media propaganda continues to amaze. A ship is in trouble. It could sink. It could break up. Oil could spill. The horror.
I guess no one with access to the media has ever heard of a shipwreck before. Or WWII, in which thousands of ships were sunk. Or natural oil seeps. Or myriad other spills, large and small. All down the memory hole, while another minor incident is hyped.
Probably but not enough anchor chains.
I agree with your point, but if I was on board, I might not be so quick with the 'minor' part.
Ethanol in the fuel and it shelled the engine.
They pay some crazy prices for an unknown risk. Personally, I think they way overestimated the value of the contents so they didn’t look like such suckers.
Two mile depth in that general area isn’t unusual.
This is if they are off the continental shelf.
Been there before but just had to waste a bunch of time there now laughing. Love it. Restores my faith in humanity.
The watermelons will hype this — to work up fears about tankers off the coast. It’s the #1 political issue in B.C. now.
For what it's worth it's actually a pretty small ship.
