Thanks to hunting season, Christmas comes early for megastores that cater to outdoor enthusiasts.
Retailers like Cabelas (CAB) and Bass Pro Shops are known to draw customers who travel many miles to both gear up for hunting season and browse in-store attractions.
Our stores across the U.S. and Canada are what many of our customers love about Bass Pro Shops, Tammy Sapp, the Springfield, Mo.-based companys director of communications said.
Bass Pro Shops stocks its stores with log and rock work, large indoor aquariums and museum quality fish and wildlife mounts that pay tribute to a regions outdoor heritage, she added. Visitors to a store feel like its part museum, art gallery, antique store, aquarium and center for conservation, education and fun.
According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a trade group that represents firearms retailers, more than 21 million have purchased a hunting license at least once over the last five years. License sales have been stable in recent years, while excise taxes on equipment like firearms, ammunition and fishing tackle are on the upswing.
For many retailers, hunting season is a critical period that can make or break their entire year.

Gun safe already full.
4x4x8’ under the floor to hold up the extra weight of all the ammo.
Ran out of room and I’m a light-weight compared to most.
Bass Pro is the only gift card I buy besides Amazon. My grandson the hunter, fisherman, gets that. Since I have 7 grands and 5 great grands range in age from 31-16, from 12 yrs-6 months, gift cards are the 10 minute CHRISTmas shopping, and I don’t have to set foot in the Anti CHRISTmas mall! And I get gas points from Kroger’s IF I time it right at 4 times the points.
Which will mean a $1 off a gal of gas per tank up to 35 gals.
That was sort of along the lines I was thinking too...the ‘came early’ thing isnt quite right. Since The Won who has a pen and phone became our president gun and ammo sales have been quite healthy. So, the title should really read Christmas never stopped...
We’ll have the new Cabelas near us open before Christmas. Everyone in my circle is getting a gift card. Happy, Happy! :)
Dopey headline. I think the timing has more to do with the arrival of hunting season than Christmas. Although “early Christmas present” makes a splendid excuse.
Just bought a Garmin Etrex 30 handheld GPS Unit...came as a package....good price...And the unit is sweet.
My Air Guard son,who just got back from Afghanistan, is going to take me pistol shopping soon. I want something smaller than my .357 revolver. Too big for my purse. Such a good boy. What says “I love my Mom” more than taking mom gun shopping?
“excise taxes on equipment like firearms, ammunition and fishing tackle are on the upswing.”
There should be NO taxes on firearms or ammunition, as POLL TAXES are illegal because voting is a right.
Year before last my wife gave me a S&W 686-6 6” for Christmas.
Give me BassPro gift cards as Christmas gifts...I’m a happy camper.
Maybe, throw in some Chic-Fil-A cards.
Used to live in Spfld. Went to Bass Pro about once a month just to visit the animals and fish. Boy do I miss it.
I’ve been saying for a year now, “prepping” is the ONLY economy left.
