Should people be eating more fat?
BBC News ^ | 15th October 2014 | Michael Mosley

'Contrary to conventional advice, eating more of some fats may be good for our health, says Michael Mosley.

It really is the sort of news that made me want to weep into my skinny cappuccino and then pour it down the sink. After years of being told, and telling others, that saturated fat clogs your arteries and makes you fat, there is now mounting evidence that eating some saturated fats may actually help you lose weight and be good for the heart.

Earlier this year, for example, a systematic review, funded by the British Heart Foundation and with the rather dry title "Association of dietary, circulating and supplement fatty acids with coronary risk" caused a stir.

Scientists from Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard, amongst others, examined the links between eating saturated fat and heart disease. Despite looking at the results of nearly 80 studies involving more than a half million people they were unable to find convincing evidence that eating saturated fats leads to greater risk of heart disease.

In fact, when they looked at blood results, they found that higher levels of some saturated fats, in particular a type of saturated fat you get in milk and dairy products called margaric acid, were associated with a lower risk of heart disease.'

“Lite” or “low fat” usually means they have replaced fat with corn syrup. It makes you fatter than the original.

Rib eye steaks - if you grill it just right the entire thing is consumed. Even the fat is super delicious.

Whenever I am sick I actually add some extra butter to melt into my chicken noodle soup....

It does seem to help along with mega doses of vitamin C...

I think I read that the French have a lower rate of heart disease even though their foods are loaded with butter... does anyone recall this?

Article says milk fat is good for you.

I knew that, you knew that. Someone tell Sasquatch so she will get the heck off our kids backs and let them eat a good lunch.

I feel like having a tall glass of chocolate milk.

Lost 35 (200 down to 165) pounds this year and never once looked at a label for fat content.

Most people would benefit from consuming more animal fat. Most, not all. There is no magic bullet diet that works for every single person.

A diet rich in proteins and healthy fats is important. Big Gov’s food pyramid is a joke.

I have come to believe over my lifetime that men and women just need different types of food to be healthy.

Men need a lot more meat than women, in particular.

It’s the processed foods that are killing people.

No sugar. No grains. No processed foods.

There is nothing 'wrong' with fat in the diet.

After hearing about this study, I have gone back to my normal diet. I feel better now. I’m just limiting the sugars now.

I’m at the point in my life where I’ve decided...”if I like it,I’ll do it..regardless of what my doctor says”.Of course I still exercise *some* self control otherwise I’d be eating well marbled sirloin morning, noon and night.

If you don't eat fat, your body will make it.

I'm more in the mold of Jack Sprat (could eat no fat), and "skinny" by most measures. Took to eating fat (bacon) later in life.

Moderation in everything.

We cook with lard, tallow, and butter, drink lots of milk, and eat eggs, beef, pork, and chicken, along with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, mostly out of our garden. We also grind our own wheat and do all our own baking.

Processed foods of any kind are a rarity at our house.

None of us are overweight, either. Everyone is very healthy.
