The great Kobane fightback: Kurdish fighters take back swathes of city as US steps up air strikes

Kurdish fighters have launched an unlikely comeback against Islamic State terrorists besieging the Syrian town of Kobane, amid claims the resistance forces have now reclaimed swathes of the city.

Images this morning showed Kurdish YPG soldiers triumphantly raising their flag above Tel Shair hill in the west of the city, where ISIS' own black jihadist flag had recently been flying.

Assisted by sustained U.S. and Arab airstrikes, the massively outgunned Kurdish troops have managed to do what looking impossible only a week ago - force ISIS to abandon strategic locations in the west of Kobane and pin them back elsewhere in the city.

The news comes as the Kurdish forces aim to solidify their gains by rounding up hundreds of young men in the area around Kobane in order to press them into compulsory military service.

Meanwhile the U.S. has intensified airstrikes against ISIS targets in and around the city, carrying out 21 bombing raids over the last two days on vehicles and buildings in the terror group's hands.

Seems like it would have been a good idea to have taken them out long before we had to bomb their city.

The problem with conquest is not the battles or the fight, it’s keeping it once you got it. Expansion is tough for any organization.

Those who don’t find inspiration from this have no heart. These people were on the brink of being defeated and massacred.

True.

But I believe ISIS will have an advantage different than most conquests because they’re not PC. They slaughter all that could be a threat to them.

I am looking for the back story that will come out later- imported fighters from Iraq? Secret US boots? I also think there was a fortunate airstrike a few days ago that damaged the ISIS commanders and some equipment.

"They slaughter all that could be a threat to them."

Which leaves behind a lot of new enemies which may have been neutral to your cause out of self prservation, a common happening in Islam.

You nailed it. Why are those ISIS tasbards only a few km from Baghdad? Is team BAM going to wait until they enter there too? Just maddening.

I hope if ISIS does retreat from Kobane that we bomb the hell out of them so they cannot live to fight another day. However I seriously doubt if Obama would let that happen.

Airdrop some heavy machine guns and RPGs for them to use.
