Appeals court reinstates Texas voter ID law

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A federal appeals court on Tuesday reinstated Texas' tough voter ID law for the November election, which the U.S. Justice Department had condemned as the state's latest means of suppressing minority voter turnout.

The ruling by the New Orleans-based 5th Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocks last week's ruling by U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos in Corpus Christi, who determined the law unconstitutional and similar to a poll tax designed to dissuade minorities from voting.

The 5th Circuit did not rule on the merits of the law; instead, it determined it's too late to change the rules for the upcoming election. Early voting starts Oct. 20.

The law remains under appeal. For now, the ruling is a key victory for Republican-backed photo ID measures that have swept across the U.S. in recent years. The Texas law, considered the toughest of its kind in the nation, requires that an estimated 13.6 million registered Texas voters will need one of seven kinds of photo identification to cast a ballot.

That's preposterous on its face.

It sure is when kids, like my daughter, had to show a BIRTH CERTIFICATE to play soccer.

No doubt but the only court that could stay the 5ths order is SCOTUS, and they never act that quickly.

To get it overturned, they will have to go to the Supreme Court. Zero chance of that happening before the election. This was nothing but a stalling action to begin with. Democrats are going to get their clocks cleaned in November and will likely be in worse shape in 2016 - in Texas, at least.

That's preposterous on its face.

My thoughts exactly.

What that is saying is one in 22.6 >>>registered<<< voters does not have a Texas drivers license.

The TOTAL population of Texas is currently about 26 million which means half the population is registered to vote.

So in that one half of the total population that are in fact ELIGIBLE to vote and has taken the time to actually register to vote, 1 in 22.6 do not have one of the following...

Texas driver license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS
Texas personal identification card issued by DPS
Texas concealed handgun license issued by DPS
United States military identification card containing the person’s photograph
United States citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph
United States passport

Nope, not buying that one.

.

You need ID to get EBT, cash checks, sign leases, enter federal/state buildings, get utilities turned on and a plethora of other activities in everyday life. The “dissuade minorities from voting” argument is pure BS.

Yahoo News repeats Department of Justice

voters believe it too.

“...”The Justice Department says more than 600,000 of those voters, mostly blacks and Hispanics, lack eligible ID.”
That’s preposterous on its face........”

No....I believe it! It’s hard to get a photo ID when you’ve been dead as long as most of those voters.........
