JOHANNESBURG (AP) — International aid organization Doctors Without Borders said that 16 of its staff members have been infected with Ebola and nine of them have died.

Speaking at a press conference in Johannesburg Tuesday, the head of Doctors Without Borders in South Africa Sharon Ekambaram said medical workers have received inadequate assistance from the international community. She said that while many pledges had been made publicly they have not improved the situation in the affected countries.

Juli Switala, a doctor working for the international aid organization who just returned from Sierra Leone, said the number of those who have died from Ebola is probably an underestimate because many families hide their sick and dying loved ones. More than 4,000 people have died from Ebola so far, according to the World Health Organization.

Either they’re having to draft volunteers who aren’t properly trained due to time constraints, they are having to utilize gear with a potentially higher rate of failure (cheapest isn’t always best!), their bsl3 precautions for a bsl4 disease have a failure rate just now being noticed due to the numbers of people involved, OR this particular iteration of the virus is somehow ‘different’ in its ability to infect.

One, some, or all.

IMHO.

Or, this strain is just that communicable no matter what the precautions taken.

Just because a possibility is really really scary. ..don’t discount it.

Africa Wins Again.

Attempts to help Africa/Africans usually prove, in the long perspective, to be a futile effort.

Only if some group has the unlisted phone number of Jesus could any attempt to help the Dark Continent have any lasting success.

In the final analysis, culture is determinative - and Africans have a culture profoundly different from America and Europe.

The Texas Hospital Cafeteria's lost a lot of business. Seems on the ground heath care workers aren't as 'casual' as the CDC... Anyone hear what's happened to Duncan's friends in isolation?

(in the article):"International aid organization Doctors Without Borders said that 16 of its staff members have been infected with Ebola and nine of them have died."

Doctors Without Borders has higher medical protocals and better equipment than the CDC protocals.
This is a pending disaster if any of the 4,000 troops get Ebola under CDC protocols, which are known to be insufficient at this time .
And putting these untrained troops in harms way , for "OPTICS" , is treacherous !!

Excellent question. I’d love to know if they’ve gotten symptomatic/infected. If they’ve, prophylactically, been given any experimental treatments that may have ameliorated their risk, given what would be obvious exposure concerns.

Lots of questions.

Barack and Michelle should personally take a look-see for themselves, so they can help. It’s the right thing to do.

Doctors Without Borders has higher medical protocols and better equipment than the CDC protocols.

Also many members of Doctors without Borders have past experience working with Ebola. If they're getting it - it's changed...

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

My father’s convinced that the federal government does not wish to stop travelers from Ebola-land, because that would basically prove that they can seal our border, which would naturally lead back to the question of sealing our borders against illegal aliens.

Then there’s the theory that, because we’ve supposedly inflicted so much misery upon the world, it would be unjust to stop travelers from Ebola-land, infected or otherwise, from coming over. At least, that’s how I think it goes.

My personal thinking is that it’s just libertarian-leftist one-world ideology at work.

Spread the misery.

I’d also like to know the health status of the sheriff who was all over the TV talking up his own level of compassion in escorting Duncan’s family to the residence in a gated community.
