PA Lawmakers support rising cost of Frein manhunt
ABC News WHTM ^ | October 13, 2014 | Dennis Owens

It is likely the most intense manhunt in the history of the Pennsylvania State Police, which insists it will spend every waking moment to find Eric Frein, the man they believe ambushed two of their own.

But that's not all they're spending.

Three hundred troopers a day are filling the woods in Pike and Monroe Counties in a 24-7 search for Frein that began more than a month ago.

State police say they don't have cost estimates but calculations by the Allentown Morning-Call show that PSP is spending $1.1 million a week just in added labor costs.

Throw in hundreds of other officers from several different agencies - FBI, ATF, New Jersey State Police, New York State Police - and the cost to taxpayers is closer to $1.5 million a week, the newspaper estimates.

Add in the cost to feed and lodge all these people swarming the middle of nowhere and it's even higher.

Some locals say the cost is too high. "It's gotten a little ridiculous after this amount of time," Mount Pocono's Gary Johnson told Scranton television station WNEP. "If they can't find him in this amount of time, they gotta stop spending that amount of money."

Senate staffers tell abc27 that state police have already told lawmakers it will need an additional $10 million, on top of its $221 million appropriation, to cover costs associated with the Frein manhunt.

Yet, if a Wawa clerk got killed in a robbery, that same thin blue line would file a report and assign manpower to it consistent with the Dept budget. Civilians aren’t as important as cops, -they only pay the bills.

This is all hypothetical....

Right now, I think they're on the trail of someone who is helping him. I think he's in the woods....looking to get out....but where to go??

Plenty of forest food around....but there's always that one commodity that we can't live without.....WATER.

If I knew more of his history, could make a better guess.

Guess I'd be following the water routes.

I tend to agree. Why so much more resources than would have been used for the rest of us.

I am not a survivalist at all, but if I were him, I think I would be working my way to the Canadian border. But maybe that view just shows I am not a survivalist.

The head of the PSP should have been fired by now for his involvement in “porn gate.” If he’s as effective at his job as the rest of the crony/lacky morons this dead man walking Corbett has surrounded himself with over the years, they’ll never find the guy.

Lots of water in the area, doubt it is any problem at all.

The Appalachian Trail is very close by, he would blend in quite well with a lot of the through hikers, and free food is no problem on the Trail.

Anyone think there would be this level of intensity and this amount of money expended if Mr Frein had killed a “civilian”?

I have a good idea where he's heading....the mortuary.

The guy knows he will eventually be caught. It's a matter of...if he's trapped...does he do the deed himself and deny the cops?? Me thinks so.

We had two different cop killers in our area. I believe both killed themselves before the cops could get to them.

Didn't that one that was living in a camp kill himself, too??

What if it was several million armed citizens who did nothing wrong other than defend their freedom?

These LEOs are in training right now in the PA woods for dealing with the likes of us, should we get "uppity"...
