Experts warn of ‘Ebola suicide bombers’

Militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) could turn themselves into Ebola “suicide bombers” against the Western world, terrorism experts have warned.

ISIS or other terrorist groups could simply dispatch individuals to Ebola-infected areas in West Africa where they would intentionally infect themselves and then spread the virus through the world’s air transportation network.

Capt. Al Shimkus, a professor of national security affairs at the U.S. Naval War College, said the scenario was plausible.

“The individual exposed to the Ebola virus would be the carrier,” Shimkus told Forbes.

“In the context of terrorist activity, it doesn’t take much sophistication to go to that next step to use a human being as a carrier,” he added.

Professor Anthony Glees, director at Buckingham University’s Center for Security and Intelligence Studies, also warned that terrorists may consider such a plan.

"Imagine some nutball infected with any disease blowing himself up in a crowd with the intent of infecting everyone."

That's what they do. It is our underestimating what they will do that is hurting us. The fact that we can not wrap our heads around the fact of what they are will to do. We are basical a culture of life, these people are a culture of death

Does 9/11 make sense to you? Does filming cutting off the heads of people?

How many times must they attack before people will understand their ruthless disregard of life that includes their own just as much as their victims?

I suggest that you read about the Beslan School attack in Russia you might just get a clue from it.

A clinic in Africa was raided and its ebola-infected bedsheets were confiscated.

Who would steal soiled bedsheets and why?

It would take tremendous effort to get somebody to steal it from a government facility.

Why not just get it when no one could stop you?

Not sure, but if I was a betting man I would place my money on a Tijuana Taxi.

That is so weird that you mentioned this! I had never heard of it before this week when a Russian friend was telling me about it.

“I don’t claim to be an expert and I am not a professor, but I thought of this potential and much worse, a very long time ago.”

Ditto - I should be getting paid this was the first thing I thought of when I heard about a new Ebola outbreak - Experts be damned where’s my money.

They could potentially do more damage just wandering around a city for a day - infecting people as they go then in a final act blow themselves up in Times Square. They could have infected thousands before they even detonate!

There are ways an infected person could spread the disease much more efficiently (and quietly) than blowing themselves up.

And I say that because I’ve heard it as a scenario.

Just sitting there in the plane might infect a few people close by. I would look out for terrorists developing mist bombs or other delivery mechanisms to infect larger numbers of people. doesn’t need to be on a plane.

One person on the subway of NYC would shut the city down.

Dear God,

From what we can tell, You've done an amazing engineering job with the Universe as a whole,
but this particular world down here is one massive CF.

Respectfully,

You wanna use a bio-agent to destroy large swaths of the population?

No. You just instill fear in large swaths of the population, and they will destroy themselves.

I’ve been thinking this would be coming a while but since there wasn’t any chatter about it I figured I would refrain from adding it into discussion space.

Now that it’s out, I’m surprised it hasn’t already happened, but then again, maybe they’re currently incubating away and tailoring vests at the moment...

There are Islamist terror groups very nearby in Nigeria, Ivory Coast, etc. It would be easy to convince a “martyr” to infect himself on a trip to the hot zone, then fly to Europe or America to detonate themselves when sick in a crowd of people at a train station or airport.

It seems to be doing a bang up job of it in west Africa.

How stable do you think the economy will be if someone sets off a couple of vest bombs here, and say also in some packed with poor metropolis like in Mexico City. They put one there and in a couple weeks there would be 10 million people all at once trying to get into evil old ‘Merica for it’s health care...

Aren’t you missing the point?

First off, it IS pretty easy to spread if you intend to do so. You are confusing the mode of infection (requiring the virus to make it through the body’s natural barriers) which can be fairly easily avoided with proper facilities and protocols in a medical setting, with the extreme difficulty of avoiding infection from someone infected and intent on infecting unsuspecting others. Big difference.

And yes, ebola isn’t particularly suitable for traditional weaponizing. So what?

No one is even thinking along those lines. The prospect here discussed is using actual infected individuals as intentional disease vectors. I think it reasonable that someone with the intent and thought out plans could easily infect dozens if not hundreds of other over a week or so before symptoms become overt.

Now say you have 100 to 200 volunteer living vectors. It is easy for me to imagine 20,000 direct victims and thousands more secondary infections.

The real intent, though would not be to kill millions, as would be the case with respect to traditional biological warfare, but to instill panic and social paralysis.

It could be very effective.
