Huckabee: "I'll Leave GOP, Become Independent"

Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee warns he'll leave the Republican Party if it stops opposing same-sex marriage and abortion.

"I'm gone. I'll become independent. I'll start finding people that have guts to stand. I'm tired of this," he told the American Family Association's radio show.

His comments follow the recent Supreme Court decision not to take up gay marriage.

"I am utterly exasperated with Republicans and the so-called leadership of the Republicans who have abdicated on this issue when, if they continue this direction they guarantee they're gonna lose every election in the future," Huckabee said. "Guarantee it."

So, using that definition, there's a vast number of people in America's history who married children.

Jerry Lee Lewis and his third wife Myra Gail. Jerry age 22 Myra age 13.

The sooner the better. We’re better off without the Huckster.

It is your right to think that way but remember that his views on this subject and other similar issues are held by a lot of the Republican base, aka social conservatives (believed to be around 25-30%+ of that base). If the GOPe wants to keep alienating its base then they will help show these fine folks the door. That will help to cement their position as an unimportant or irrelevant minor party for many years to come. Can one say the 'Whig Party'?!

To the GOP-E: we don't want a Socially Liberal, Fiscally Conservative GOP any more than you want a Fiscally Liberal, Socially Conservative GOP.

They learned nothing from the Goldwater drubbing.

Sorry but I’ve seen no evidence whatsoever they want a Fiscal Libertarian in there.

100% agree.

“This is the start of my 2016 Iowa Caucus campaign - because in the oddball little Iowa caucus population, which is teeny tiny by the way, fully 30% of them will vote for whoever makes the most extreme statements on social issues, regardless of how pathetic they are on all other issues. I got that 30% in 08 and Santorum got them in 12, and now I have to beat Santorum to them in 16.”

Well, it's not as if the GOP has had that good of a track record on fiscal or constitutional issues, either. So it's not just the "SoCon warriors" who are starting to get disenchanted with them...

The Huckster was a social welfare “conservative.” A spin off of kinder and gentler? Dunno. Won’t miss him.

Dear Huckster,

Your own nannystatism (smoking bans, food police) have laid the foundation for federal involvement in “marriage.” You empowered big government when it suited your desired nannystatism, now you can choke on the use of that foundation for federal involvement in other areas that you deem unacceptable.

I hope you find the petard you handed them a fun hoisting...

I am worried Huckleberry Hound will start a third party anoint himself as the presidential nominee and thus ensure victory for Hilary Clinton.

My thoughts too - Independents done win national elections - they help the Left win the elections.

Well... realistically, he isn’t saying anything that any one of us and others out here haven’t said before.

If the GOP doesn’t stick to it’s declared principles, people out here have said “Third Party time” over and over again. So... he’s just publicly calling them out for their Dem-Lite BS.

I’m not a big fan of Huck, but I think he’s just trying to light a candle under their “moderate” asses.

Seems to me, anyway...

RE :”This would carry more weight if Suckabee was actually a conservative outside of social issues.”

My point too. Huck himself carries lots of his own weight.

Bohner had the house defend DOMA and Kennedy was the key vote in killing it.

And who has Huckabee convinced anyway? The choir?

What if like us they know that Huck is FOS and not going anywhere?

Whats next? Polygamy? Marrying children?

There’s a good possibility that the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) will be ratified in the Illinois House this fall. The Illinois House has a Democrat super majority.

The ERA Amendment states: [Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.]

ERA was ratified in the Illinois State Senate days before the spring recess. If enacted, left-winged extremists say ERA can continue where it left off in the ratification process. With the liberal climate in the Justice Department, anything is possible.

Ramifications of this amendment will affect every law pertaining to gender as well as Constitutionally protect perversion.

Illinois citizens should contact their legislators and urge them to oppose ERA. (I was shocked to see ‘conservative’ Illinois State Senators support this Amendment.)

These are the 2 issues on which Huck has always been right. They are what make him a social conservative.

However, he’s been very wrong on amnesty and social spending. They are what make him a Rino.

There’s just something about him, though, on those issues that trouble me. I really think he’ll go with whichever way the wind blows on welfare and amnesty.

I do agree with him on this part, though. If the republicans endorse abortion and gay marriage, I am bound by my faith in God NOT to be a part of such an organization.

The seven year window on ERA ratification expired decades ago. Congress added three years to the window, a federal court in Idaho ruled that unconstitutional, and the Supreme Court declared the case moot, refusing to grant cert.

It's dead. To bring it back to life, Congress must pass it again with a two-thirds majority in both Houses. That will never happen.

Well, yeah.. I guess there’s THAT, ain’t there...

Point is, he’s going public and vocal with that sentiment before a midterm election, and that pisses them off.

Whether he means it or not is irrelevant; in their minds, he may be pulling votes away from them.
