In the small, suburban city of Woburn, Mass., some 25 minutes north of Boston, local history will be made. On Thursday, Oct. 9, the Bostonian Society will finally crack open the 113-year old time capsule lodged in the head of the lion statue that typically sits perched atop the Old State House in downtown Boston.
The statue, paired with its unicorn counterpart, was hoisted from the city's oldest, continuously used public building as part of a renovation project. It was subsequently decided that whatever goodies are still being kept from the public ought to finally see daylight.
Heather Leet, director for development with the Bostonian Society, told BostInno in an email that the time capsule wasn't confirmed to exist until late in September when it was brought to Skylight Studios in Woburn.

Who is opening it? Jerry Rivers? (Geraldo Rivera)
Great reference - That darn FROG! Wonder if they’ll use a deatomizer like at the end of that clip?
Love that cartoon!
Here’s a real time capsule set to be opened in 6970.

A note of warning about that slick young Joseph Kennedy..
I have older stuff in my attic.
The advantage of these time capsules is that they keep what contemporaries think is important and not what later generations think was important through the lens of history.
We need objects from both groups of archivists.
Growing up, we kept publications that we thought were important like the moon landing, assassinations, natural disasters. Come to find out, everyone else did also so there is no collector value. What is fascinating is the other news of the day also in the publication, plus the advertising.
So much of the culture from 40-50 years ago is relevant. Tribute bands, if they are good, make good money and sell out arenas. Then the whole muscle car phenom. The term resto-mod for updating an old body on new suspension.
Nope, Ovaltine wouldn’t be invented for a couple more years.
I bet they find Obola’s birth certificate...
Yep. The guy who was supposed to open it died years ago.......And during his final years with alzheimers he kept tellin his children that there was something he was supposed to do but couldn't remember what.
Everybody loves the Michigan Rag!
They’ll find a note that says, “What?! You guys still here?!!”
As if it would ever have occurred to anyone in that era that a black rabble-rouser - excuse me, community organizer could ever be elected POTUS.
That Osaka link was fun. After a cancelled Northwest Orient flight the airline put us up in downtown Osaka one night. Very large city.
And a Kennedy raping a woman.
“The Bostonian Society had expected the time capsule to include letters, newspaper clippings and other items from 1901, the year it was placed in the statue on the Old State House. Papers were found, along with the red book inside the copper box roughly the size of a modern shoebox. The book had no visible markings, and nothing was taken out of the box because of the items’ fragile condition. So, the contents of the book remain a mystery, for now.”
