Ebola-hit Liberia cancels nationwide election

Ebola-hit Liberia has suspended its nationwide Senate polls after the election commission admitted it would not be able to stage the ballot safely, according to a government statement.

Almost three million voters had been due in polling stations on Tuesday but organisers said there was no way a "mass movement, deployment and gathering of people" could go ahead without further endangering lives.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was exercising powers under a state of emergency announced in August "to suspend... any and all rights ordinarily exercised, enjoyed and guaranteed to citizens", the foreign office said in a statement issued late Wednesday, quoting a presidential proclamation.

The presidential executive orders issued to control outbreaks of disease, as they are in place, cannot override the Constitutional responsibilities nor laws passed by congress and signed into law.

Our current Federal Administration no longer follows 'the law', unless it is convenient.

The states run the election, not the Feds.

That's right. The big O can executive order all he wants but all governors and secretaries of state would have to play along. Ain't gonna happen.

If there were an actual epidemic the state and Feds would not have to do anything- most rational people would not go to a high risk area like a polling place, assuming poll workers would even show up.

Although we may not like this, or have concern it could happen here, the truth is that this was the intelligent thing to do.

It would appear self-defeating to ask people to stay home and self-isolate to keep the spread of disease down, and then have them leave their homes to go out in public and vote.

Obolacare was passed by Congress. It has provisions for outbreaks that concentrate the power in the President or those he chooses to delegate.

> Hmmmm...

Just yesterday we learned that Ebola hits minorities the worst. It would be wrong to have an election during an outbreak.

Aren’t whites a minority now? If not it won’t be long with the UACP breeding Rats the 0 administration brought in....

They could...but I’d imagine even fellow democrats would have a problem with it happening so fast after only a few reported cases of Ebola.

The cancellation would be defended not just on a health crisis created by uncontrolled immigration, but just as significantly because the Democrat Socialist Party will claim the election would be “unfair” (next to “tolerance”, the Left’s favorite mantra) if polling places are closed due to obola concerns. Far more GOP and conservative (distinction intended) votes than Democrat Socialist votes would be cast because they are mailed in ... and the Left will scream from the rafters.
