New York's Waldorf-Astoria hotel holds a special place for many Chinese visitors starting at the very top.
The diminutive Chairman Deng Xiaoping stayed at the hotel during his first trip to the United States in 1974, where then-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger threw a banquet in his honor.
Dengs handpicked successors Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao followed his example, as have luminaries including Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma, who used the glamorous venue to launch his recent IPO roadshow, attracting hundreds of investors.
The hotel has been sold to the Chinese, but the purchaser behind this weeks $1.95 billion deal is surprisingly an insurance company little known outside China.
Chinese Anbang Insurance Group, only founded in 2012, has grown rapidly. The Shenzhen-based group had amassed assets of $83 billion just 18 months after its founding. Today, Anbang has over $700 billion in combined assets, ranking eighth among all domestic insurers, according to Bloomberg.
Anbang also boasts an extremely well-connected board, with many family members of notable government officials.

Yum.
Are u sure that is Chicken? lol
Oh that’s funny! If the broccoli beef ain’t good the rest of the menu ain’t.
Did they pay 3x the asking price like they did for Gretta’s DC home during Chinagate?
and no, I am never going to let that go even if I am the only one who caught it/remembers.
Just like all the testimony against clinton thug pelicano who even had a witness testify he had bragged about being able to make murder look like suicide.
Just like Bettie Curries brother who was beaten before her Chinagate testimony and then later killed by a hit and run driver when she was named a witness in Lewinksi scandal.
Starr report said Clinton called Monica Lewinski at 2am to give her 2 pieces of news....Curries brother had just been killed and you are now a witness against me.
These things must be preserved or people will forget how evil the clinton crime machine was.
The Waldorf is wonderfully retro. Spent my last night before leaving NYC staying there ... with my dog tagging along. Too tired, we ordered room service including champagne that was brought in a silver(y) champagne bucket that became the dog’s water dish. A fun memory.
That’s SO funny!
Ah so, now Wardolf-Astolia berong to us!
What’s the Waldorf’s pet policy?
I’m headed to NYC soon, but presumed taking pooch was out of the question.
They have to hide all that cash somewhere. They will probably lose money on daily operations.
This is so sad.
The country is for sale.
.
My experience was a long time ago, c.1977. Probably not allowed today but you might call to ask. They tend to be VERY accommodating. If nothing else, they’d find a high $$$ spot to care for Fido while you stay at the hotel. Even if you don’t stay at THEIR hotel.
Always remember, they can't load it on a container ship and take it back to Beijing.
Remember the experience of the Japanese when they "bought" Rockefeller Center.
They got their hair taken.
