South Africa’s controversial first gay-friendly mosque, which also allows Christian worshippers and women to lead prayers, was damaged by a fire overnight, its founder and the police said Saturday.
I’m not sure how this even qualifies as a mosque if there are Christians leading prayers. Clearly a lot of Muslims felt the same way.
The mosque has faced fierce criticism and threats of violence from Muslims with 14 national and provincial organizations representing the Muslim community across South Africa issuing a joint statement condemning Hargey’s plans.
According to an AFP report, local police have opened an arson inquiry into the fire which occurred on the eve of the celebration of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice).
Hargey said he believes the incident to be a deliberate arson attack as petrol and oil were used. He added that unidentified people have seen on closed-circuit television footage making several reconnaissance trips to the mosque two hours before the attack.
How long did the open mosque last without a fire?
The mosque, which welcomes gay people, Christians, and treats men and women equally, opened peacefully in Cape Town last month amid opposition and threats of violence.
So it made it a month without a fire. There’s only so many fires it can survive. This is a practical reason why, aside from theology, the Islam reform movement that some people like to imagine, will never go anywhere.
Hargey said the attack was the latest in a string of attempts to try to close the mosque.
About 10 days ago the mosque was temporarily shut down, apparently because it did not comply with a by-law regarding the number of parking bays it needed to provide.
“But I think this is the last straw. They’ve tried all means. We’ve had death threats. They wish to shoot me… I get anonymous calls.”
The Muslim Judicial Council declined to comment on the incident.
“I remember when I was a child there were mosque burnings all over Arkansas!”
There are no moderate Muslims.
These are as close to Obama’s ideal Muslim as you would like.
The problem is Islam doesn’t accept pluralism - if by that you mean the religious liberalism of some Christians and Jews.
Its as likely a prospect as the existence of unicorns.
