So when you're totally 100% surprised by a group of armed individuals who resemble some freaking armed terrorist commando mob are you the first one to give up??
If your wife is screaming this to you, would not your first instinct and reaction not be to protect yourself?
Of course the cops are going to say this. And to believe them also requires a belief that Mr. Hooks, a grandfather, successful businessman, pillar of his community and by all accounts, a law-abiding individual in possession of a security clearance decided "To hell with this! Let's end it all and go out in a blaze of glory!"
Do you know who shoots back at cops after cops announce themselves as cops? Murderers. Guys with nothing to lose. I don't believe that Mr. Hooks decided at that moment that he was going to throw everything away.
