Military Forced to Get Picky in Recruiting
Kansas City Star ^ | May 13, 2014 | Rick Montgomery

Army Sgt. 1st Class Terrence Hoard must reach potential recruits early to set them straight. They think anybody can enlist. Many see the military as a last resort in a tough job market -- but always an option, the youth assume. Truth is, the class of 2014 now leaving high school will face more difficulty qualifying for the armed services than ever in the 40-year history of the all-volunteer force.

So Hoard tells them long before graduation day: Don't ever get caught with a joint. Work out, shed weight.

And be extra careful about getting tattooed. "We're turning down twice as many as before," said Hoard, who supervises the Army recruiting station in Grandview.

His office several years back needed to sign up 16 to 20 soldiers per month to meet recruiting targets. Now 10 or 12 will do.

Last week, a dozen fresh recruits and wannabe warriors showed up for pushups and jumping jacks. Among them: Kyle Bayard of Drexel, Mo., whose lifelong dream of serving was held up for a year because he had been prescribed attention deficit medicine in high school. Mauricio Lonza maintained a B average in high school and through a couple of years at Kansas State University. But three times he failed the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery before he got a passing score.

"Math was never my category," said Lonza, 21.

"..Last week, a dozen fresh recruits and wannabe warriors showed up for pushups and jumping jacks".

Jumping jacks? Not the Army I was in.

Bet “some” people get recruited even though they couldn’t pass the tests and backgrounds.

Given the state of the gay culture, it's hard to see how any of them could legitimately qualify for entry, much less get a security clearance once they're in.

That actually sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

They need to hold the line on math. Meade would never have won at Gettysburg if they had let men who flunked calculus into the Union army.

When they say "math," what I think they really mean is "arithmetic."

You've got to be pretty darn stupid to "flunk" any section of the ASVABs.

Being stupid can get you and others killed.

Remember the "friendly fire" incident in one of the Iraq wars when the army guys called in their own GPS coordinates instead of the enemy's?

The smart bomb went exactly where it was told to go.

I wouldn’t put them in blue jeans for the simple reason that they are not good exercise garments. Another reason for their wearing their own clothes is that a lot of them have very unusual body shapes (read: “fat”), and it would cost a lot more to give them uniforms.

A formation would be for admin only. They might even have individual GPS tracking, for location, direction and speed, with cellphone computer commands directing them what to do.

Not a whole lot of privacy there. Cameras everywhere.

Importantly, I knew a corporal in the Army who had a very good observation about his NCOs and officers. “No matter how much planning and supervision they give me, I know I will always get an hour of slack time or more every day.”

And that is true, when people are in charge. Computers are a different matter, however.

Ideally, but the end of the program, they will be superior enlistees.

"Math" sounds better than "arithmetic" since any number of recruits can't count to 11 without unzipping their fly...

Even in 1970, we had one guy in my boot camp platoon who was out, after only a week, when the Corps found out he was illiterate. This was at a time when you only had to be warm to the touch.

I joined the military under pressure from the draft. I spent four years in the Air Force rather than 2 years in the Army. It was the best thing I ever did when I was young. Besides maturing me and giving me discipline, motivation, confidence, experience and drive, I met my wife of 40 years on my first assignment. She was also Air Force.

I think the military needs to reinstitute the draft for 18 year olds. Our youth today do not understand commitment to their country like my generation did. They wander aimlessly for their first 10-15 years thinking that the liberal drivel they learned in school is reality, when it is not. They need something to focus on and allow them to grow up under a disciplined environment. I saw many a young recruit turn into responsible adults when they ended their enlistment. This goes for both men and women. It would go a long way in maturing our youth and teaching them the right skills to become good citizens and survive in the society. I don’t see that in our culture today.

A person who can’t do math is a person who can’t solve problems using a toolbox of skills. They make good cannon fodder, but little else in a military that relies on technology like ours does.

Fags and illegals will be getting favored treatment now. Normal white boys need not apply. We gonna have us one of dem “fundamentally transformed” militaries now.

The Libertarian in me says you are dead wrong. As one who served in Viet Nam once said “You end up in Iraq.” I say get rid of the Peace Corps and Americorp. Use the $$$ for the military. Their benefits are on par with those who serve in uniform. Something is wrong.

A recent article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, stated that 75% of NV High-School-Graduates do not qualify to join the US military.

As far as the Diversity issue goes; I’m pretty sure that Affirmative Action means low-to-no standards. That’s the whole point of AA.

And this argument you make, makes me “dead wrong”, how exactly? Joining the military is not a vacation. It is a serious job that may put you and others in harm’s way. And again, this is wrong for what reason?

Look, someone needs to defend our country and secure our freedoms. I’m just suggesting that we pass the responsibility around to every able-bodied youth so they have some skin in the game. Something in the pot. Without that sense of responsibility and purpose, we get what we have now, a bunch of whining, 99% ers occupying Wall Street, give-us-ours-now-before-we’ve-earned-it crowd. Instead they could be earning their keep and sacrificing something for their country. We’ve lost our sense of belonging to something special in this country and we need to get it back.

From the article: “Further shrinkage will be necessary if sequestration fights resume in coming years, Hagel and other defense leaders said.”

Ye Gads! First it’s tattoos...Next it’s Shrinkage!

It’s time to panic.

Truthfully, what the US military really needs right now is something quite simple to set up. A compound to get potential enlistees into shape.

The Marine Corps already does (did?) this. Everyone who arrives at basic training is given an initial PT test. If you fail, you go to the physical conditioning platoon (pcp/pork chop platoon). When you can pass the initial PT test, you get to leave pcp and start basic training.

This is pretty much what you proposed, except for the "run by a private company" part. I don't really see this program as being expensive for the Marine Corps, so I don't see it as a big deal.

Also, the people who emerge successfully from pcp may not be the finest physical specimens, but they are definitely mentally tough. Spending weeks at basic training without even beginning the actual training has got to be a serious psychological challenge.

It makes me sick to think that the CIC would not even qualify for the military based on why they are turning down recruits. But, there he is - in command of our troops. What a farce!

One reason - among many - I would never let my kids take that junk.
