High-level North Korean delegation to attend AG closing ceremony

North Korea plans to send a high-ranking delegation to the Incheon Asian Games closing ceremony Saturday, Seoul's Ministry of Unification said.

According to official sources, the North informed the South on Friday that it wants to send Hwang Pyong-so, Choe Ryong-hae and Kim Yang-gon to the ceremony slated for 6 p.m. Saturday.

The three officials plan to arrive via a direct air route from North Korea to Incheon at 10 a.m.

Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae is expected to hold talks with the North Korean officials after their arrival.

Hwang was recently tapped as the director of the military's General Political Bureau, the top military post in North Korea.

Kim is head of the United Front Department of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, tasked with overseeing the activities of sleeper agents operating in South Korea, while Hwang is said to exert considerable influence in the North despite stepping down from his post of deputy chairman of the National Defense Commission.

Seoul, meanwhile, said it will withhold judgment on why the North is sending such a high-level delegation to Incheon at this juncture. (Yonhap)

What’s that?

It’s early morning here and I don’t feel like thinking...enough other equations to keep straight from work.

This would have to be a coup with the military or it won't work...the people would not be controlled and just flood the border...it's going to take years I'm afraid ...and a lot of control....still...the people are pretty “obedient” so they may do this nice.

But they will have some episodes along the way. I cannot help but think of the S, Koreans though...they have resented the N.Koreans for the past years for bringing the people into the country because they see them as draining resources that could be there's. Additionally they realize how difficult it is for those who get there to acclimate to modern life....takes a very long time...and grueling for some who can't adjust to "freedom".

P.S. I think we're kind of jumping the gun a bit...we really don't know what is happening actually.

It could take decades to really unify if done gradually.

...At least a couple of generations...

That's going to depend on how the International Community sees this....but for the people to adapt...yes a couple for sure...but only this one to help jump start it all.

They are pretty self-sufficinet, even if they have to starve at times....so with the right controls in place this might go smoother than we might imagine.

Additionally there's been many businesses that have wanted to get into N.Korea but their entire infrastructure would have to be “Built”....there's nothing there much to speak of...but i understand the companies “standing by” would all get together and make that happen as well.

The biggest issue will be doing business in a way the people understand...that's going to be tough because of years and years of no trust at all in outsiders...and that through deep embedded brain washing.

Hwang is OGD. He is a vice director of OGD, its de-facto head. Recently he became the top military commissar as well with the rank of Vice Marshall.

Yes,...but there’s a strong undercurrent of people there, primarily the younger generations that do resent the N.Koreans....you don’t hear them too much because that would be speaking up against the Government’s push for Re-unification...but it’s there and brisk.

They know they’ll be paying for it. I was recently shocked a bit by how high some of their food prices were, even for something simple and bought in bulk like ramen noodles ... er.. ramyeon excuse me... 5 for $3.50?? I can get 24 packs for that price here at H-E-B - the square kind.

I new their beef and fruit prices were high because of their geography and all that, but ramen? I was surprised.

That would indicate China is definatly forcing this ....the only way you can get N.Korea to move is by denying them what they want....China has that power...and looks like they’ve been using it....

N’Korea doesn’t always heed China by the way......and when they don’t, and China wants them to then the pressure is pretty significant til they bend.

So China’s made some deal somewhere to put this pressure on them....as said ..China does nothing regarding N.Korea unless it stands to gain very well somehow.

The UN is acting like NK can be self-sufficient in food in 3-4 years... I don’t see how that would happen without some major economic changes

Yonhap didn’t add any sarcastic comments though. I guess they take news seriously.
