The military has begun medical testing for Ebola at two new labs in Liberia, and service members are starting to build two treatment centers there for victims of the deadly disease.
Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon's spokesman, said Friday that based on the latest requests from U.S. commanders, up to 4,000 U.S. troops could be deployed to West Africa to provide engineering, logistics, medical and other support to the mission there. That number has been slowly climbing, as military leaders arrive in the Liberian capital of Monrovia and assess the needs of the region.
Kirby said that the service members are not going to treat patients and are not expected to come in contact with anyone who is infected. But he said the military is training the troops about how to avoid getting Ebola, and also setting plans in place to deal with any service member who might get infected.

And just WHO is paying for this? Nevermind.
This isn’t going to end well.
So an American photographer got Ebola but our servicemen can’t?
In a sick sort of way this reminds me of the SNL skit where Jimmy Carter sends the cleaning lady in to clean up a little water spill at Three Mile Island.
Until they do. Will every last nail and screw be US gov issue? Will they be hiring locals to help around base? So, they will be quarentined on base and won't be allowed to go into town? How about the officers meeting and greeting the mayor, his wife and a delegation of local welcomers? What's going to happen when the locals rush the gate begging to get in and leave little Susie at the feet of the guards? Or infected Fido wanders through camp?
Wait til a bunch of these kids in our military come down with Ebola. What a mess that is going to be.
I wouldn’t be calling them kids.
Since bio threats and biological warfare, and the ability to live and fight in bio contaminated zones are all part of the military mission, the military better show some competence in protecting itself in this area.
Just as we are seeing now in the U.S., now is the time to find our shortcomings and oversights, not when we are coming under a planned and coordinated biological attack that has instantly and totally enveloped us.
I don’t care. :-)
He got it Tuesday and was hired Wednesday, so could have been anywhere doing anything before Tuesday. Also Buddhist so probably thought he could meditate his way out of it.
Third world slum? Don't think so. They are there to keep 10 or 20 thousand cases from turning into 100,000 or more. If instead we air dropped some shelters, beds and supplies they would be looted and no progress would be made against the disease.
Have you ever watched Cold Case? A Marine mom sees her trained grunt with her heart at whatever age she first saw him do whatever it is he’s doing (digging holes to sleep in (age 10), shooting his weapon- mine used a plastic elephant-trunk was the barrel at 3?). And when it comes to putting them in a situation that is PREVENTABLE, and without confidence in those who are in control (I have great confidence in Drill Instructors, SSgts, and others experienced in war except 2nd Lts — just kidding!) expect moms and wives to get reeeeeaaally upset if they get sick or if we lose one because of this. I have a baaad feeling about it. The ‘one’ who gave this order has my vote of no confidence.
ggggrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Why are they building treatment centers? Liberia is poor, but there are schools, theaters, churches and other places that could be taken over and converted into treatment centers.
You might need to build clinics in rural areas or in refugee camps, but not in Liberia.
once the treatment bases are expensively built, the wayward local shaman will declare that the Americans are practicing penis shrinking via black magic.
These treatment camps will be attacked relentlessly.
