5 Reasons to Ignore Negative Polling on Sen. Pat Roberts
Wall Street Journal ^ | 10/2/14 | JOHN FEEHERY

Posted on 10/02/2014 11:09:13 AM PDT by SoFloFreeper

A new USA Today/Suffolk University poll has his challenger, Greg Orman, beating him by five points, 46% to 41%.

Here are five reasons that won’t happen:

....Obama is widely disliked in Kansas. His approval rating is 33%...

....Roberts is a known quantity.

...3. Nobody has ever heard of Greg Orman. (He would have a better chance of competing if his last name started with an “N.”)

4. Democrats can’t really help Mr. Orman....

...5. The tea party has nowhere else to go. Tea partyers don’t want to be blamed for losing the Senate to Harry Reid....

...Polls are a snapshot in time. Things don’t look good right now for the incumbent senator. But if I were a betting man, I would bet on Pat Roberts.

This isn’t rocket science.

Who would make a better US Senator?

Roberts or Orman?

IMO this Orman deal in Kansas is a test balloon for the Democrats and future campaigns. Run two candidates, one an Independent and get whichever one is internally polling worse to withdraw. If it can work in Kansas it will work anywhere.

You’re right. Excellent thought.

This isn’t rocket science.

No. This is being told to hold our nose and vote for the establishment guy so that things can go on as they have been, the GOPe can remain in control, and the Tea Party can be kept in it's place.

When all is said and done I guess it isn't rocket science.

It is perfectly absurd to characterize Roberts as a RINO.

He voted against Obamacare, the Porkulus, Cap and Trade, Dodd_Frank, Harry Reid, BHO’s SCOTUS appointments.

In addition Roberts is:

Pro-life
Pro-Second Amendment
Pro-Keystone
Pro-drilling
Pro-business
Pro-defense
Pro-traditional marriage.

Where EXACTLY does Orman stand on all of these issues?

Fact is Roberts has one of the most conservative voting records in the US Senate. I guess the definition of RINO has changed in recent years.

This race is too important to support a charlatan like Orman.

There have been many instances where the candidate I voted for in the primary didn’t win. But I didn’t stay at home or vote for the Dem candidate out of spite. And Orman really is a Dem.

Grow up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grow up!!!!!

I want a Senate where Ted Cruz is the norm and not the oddity. You want a Senate full of McConnells and Cochrans and Grahams and Alexanders and, yes, Roberts. That's where we differ. I'm sure you GOPe folks would like all of us to "grow up" or just disband the Tea Party and go away but I'm afraid it isn't going to happen.

It will be a close race, but he will win.

No. You’re wrong.

What you want is 100% perfection and everyone marching in lock step.

Sorry to disappoint you, but politics doesn’t work that way.

Never has. Never will. The US Senate certainly will never work that way.

What you want is perfection and utopia. You will never get it.

I live in CA stuck with Boxer and Feinstein for over 20 years.

I would kill to have a US Senator who voted my way at least 70% of the time instead of 0% of the time.

No, marching in lockstep is what you want. Regardless of who the candidate is, as long as they have an R after their name you want us to blindly support them. So I'll ask you what I asked another FReeper.

Look at the primaries in Mississippi where the establishment used their influence over the courts and the party to ensure Cochran was the candidate. Kansas and Kentucky and other states where they defeated the Tea Party candidate by setting out to destroy their professional reputations. South Carolina and Tennessee and states where the establishment incumbent has mocked and belittled the Tea Party and their ideals. Look at all that and then let me ask you this; what lesson is the GOPe supposed to take away from this election? If they can pull every string and use every dirty trick in the book to hold on to thier seats, and still have people like you saying we still need to vote for them blindly and unquestioningly because two years of Mitch McConnell as Majority Leader is better than two years of Harry Reid then what hope to we have of ever changing anything? What chance is there of ever having a Republican Party where men like Ted Cruz are the norm with in the party and not the pariah? What reason is there for the Tea Party or any other Conservative movement within the party to exist? If at the end of the day the establishment can brush any dissent conpemptuously aside and not pay a price for it then what is the purpose of trying to change anything? Can you answer that for me please?

Here is a little Poli Sci 101

Entrenched incumbents usually win.

If we spent half as much time focused on defeating the Dems as we do fighting each other we might start actually win some elections.

The Dems have nasty primary battles too. But after the primary, they all close ranks and get behind their party nominee. Wish we could do that too.

My gosh, in today’s political environment, even RR would be deemed a RINO by some folks around here.

One thing I have noticed over the years, the far right and the far left have some things in common. They believe in some sort of political utopia if everyone is all on the same page and they insist on ideological conformity and purity.

The real world of course does not work that way. In Kansas the choice is now between Roberts and Orman. Not a tough decision. The only reason not to vote for Roberts now is out of spite. Very childish and immature if you ask me.

Oh goody. Nothing I like more on a Friday than a pompous FReeper trying to lecture me on things I already know.

If we spent half as much time focused on defeating the Dems as we do fighting each other we might start actually win some elections.

All we have to do is eliminate the Tea Party and all those people who think the GOPe is leading the party in the wrong direction and your problem is solved. Muzzle Cruz, Palin, and all the other trouble makers.

The real world of course does not work that way. In Kansas the choice is now between Roberts and Orman. Not a tough decision. The only reason not to vote for Roberts now is out of spite. Very childish and immature if you ask me.

The reason not to vote for Roberts it to send a message that people are tired of having our candidates cramed down out throats by any means necessary. Roberts is a bad Senator. He is the poster child for everything that is wrong with the GOP establishment and everything that disgusts people about politicians. He has lost all touch and whatever interest he ever had in his constituency. He has an approval rating in that state that is lower than Obama's. He believes his Senate seat is his by divine right. If he isn't the one to send a message to the GOPe that the Tea Party is not to be ignored or crushed out then who is? If the Tea Party conservatives stay home then Orman wins. The GOP will take the Senate anyway. Orman will likely caucus with the Republicans because they'll offer him a better deal. Mitch McConnell will be Senate Majority Leader. Your little world will keep revolving. But maybe because of what happens to Roberts, Ted Cruz will not be ignored as much, or be made a pariah. Maybe Mike Lee will be taken a little more seriously. And maybe future GOP Senate candidate will tread a little more lightly with the Conservative wing of the party. And maybe an outcome like that would be worth it.

Absolute bunk pure horsepoop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fact is Roberts has among the most conservative records in the entire US Senate.

He voted against all of BHO’s policies including Obamacare, the Porkulus, Dodd-Frank, Cap and Trade, not to mention Harry Reid as Majority Leader and BHO’s SCOTUS appointments.

In addition we know Roberts is

pro-life
pro-gun
pro-traditional marriage
pro-Keystone
pro-oil
pro-coal
pro-nuclear
pro-business

Where EXACTLY does Orman stand on all of these issues?

Of course we know that Roberts isn’t perfect, but he VASTLY preferable to Orman on just about every issue imaginable.

Two facts I do know about Orman: He contributed to BHO’s presidential campaign and Al Franken’s US Senate campaign. That is all you need to know about him IMHO.

I have never missed an election. I vote for the most conservative candidates I can find in the primary. Some win some lose. I have never missed an election since I began voting in 1982. I have never come across one single instance yet when the Dem candidate was superior to the Republican-—even if the GOP candidate was less than 100% perfect.

This race is a no brainer.

You’re wasting your time with these we-don’t-need-no-stinkin-Senate people. They aren’t here to analyze or debate, just depress and demoralize.

You are perfectly right about that!

But we need to call them out on some of the nonsense they spew.

It is beyond disgusting. It might be radical. But it sure isn’t conservative.

All responsible conservatives are backing Roberts.

My theory is the GOPe doesn’t WANT to retake the Senate and are paying trolls to depress conservative turnout.

Haughtiness and I-know-Best are some of their notable characteristics. No humility or worry for our Nation, just depressing and mockery of conservatives who DO want the Senate back.

Obviously it is for some since you ignored everything else I said. Whatever. Roberts may well win in the end. Cochran will win. McConnell will win and be the next majority leader. Graham will win. Alexander will win. Nothing will change. In 2016 they'll do it all over again and you can support Murkowski and McCain and Rubio and Grassley and all the rest.

Of course nothing is going to change for the next two years even if the GOP wins a smashing victory this November.

BHO is still POTUS for the next two years. He can still veto anything he doesn’t like or doesn’t want. And I fully expect him to do just that. Stalemate is the best we can hope for right now.

But EVERY election is important. In 2006 the Dems scored a significant victory in the midterm election, taking control of both houses of Congress, which led to an even bigger victory for them in 2008 when the elected their POTUS and increased their margins in both houses of Congress which in turn gave them the support and votes they needed to push through their aggressive domestic agenda which of course included Obamacare.

That is why this midterm is critically important. We have to work with what we have. There is nothing perfect in politics.

He won't have to. The Democrats will filibuster everything in sight.

Stalemate is the best we can hope for right now.

Stalemate is what we have now. So in other words even Orman wouldn't chance a thing.

That is why this midterm is critically important. We have to work with what we have. There is nothing perfect in politics.

I'm sorry but I truly believe that is a very short-sighted viewpoint that will leave us with nothing but McConnells and McCains for election cycles to come. The Tea Party will die out because the establishment will ignore it and belittle it. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee will be marginalized and forced out of the Senate. But hey, we may have Mitch McConnell running things so everything's good.

The GOP will likely lose the Senate in 2016. The numbers are stacked against them. Two years of Mitch McConnell as majority leader will accomplish nothing. But two election cycles where the GOP establishment is brought up short and taught that the Conservative vote is not a given to candidate who pay only lip-service to true Conservative principles may mean that in 2018 we could have a Senate where men like Cruz and Lee are the norm if not the majority. Where there is real leadership. And where a Republican president could get things done. By my way of thinking that longer term goal is worth the risk of a Senator Orman.
