IMO this Orman deal in Kansas is a test balloon for the Democrats and future campaigns. Run two candidates, one an Independent and get whichever one is internally polling worse to withdraw. If it can work in Kansas it will work anywhere.

But isn’t that what a lot of “values voters” have been doing for the past eight or ten years? How could they have enabled this half-breed because they didn’t particularly like Romney? He was at the bottom of my list, but as distasteful as it was, I voted for him because Obama was a “proven” Marxist. So flame away you folks down in the Amen Pew!

2. Pat Roberts is a known quantity. He’s a well-known figure in the state.
It's precisely because he's well-known in the state that got him into this pickle in the first place.
3. Nobody has ever heard of Greg Orman.
Which may be working in his favor since he's milking the "I'm a true independent and both parties are to blame" schtick for all it's worth and it appears to be working.
4. Democrats can’t really help Mr. Orman.
They don't need to, not overtly. They can do it with anonymous 501(c)(3)'s and just staying out of Robert's way and letting him be him.
5. The tea party has nowhere else to go
Except to stay home. And they may.
Heck, let’s run actual conservatives in every race, and only withdraw if the Republican proves his bona fides. Otherwise, the Democrat with the (R) after his name can take one for Karl’s team.
I don't know if the Democrats are that smart. I think they got caught by Orman's success, decided that bumping off Roberts was more important than if the person doing it had a D behind their name or an I, and figured that they have a better chance getting him to caucus with them than with the Republicans. They're just taking advantage of the situation, not pulling the strings.

So let's get this straight: The GOPe uses dirty tricks and liberalism to get their Democrat-lite candidate nominated, and it will be the Tea Party's fault if said Rovian candidate flames out?

Palin was in town for half a morning and Roberts spent an hour or two flipping pancakes with her. By comparison he dragged Bob Dole all over the state to campaign stops and has reached out to John McCain, Jeb Bush, and Nancy Kassebaum of all people to please come help save him. The Palin stop was a feeble attempt to placate the Tea Party. If she was serious about him or he was serious about her then they would have used her more and to better advantage.
