$845,000 Porsche 918 Spyder burns to the ground in Canadian gas station

Because of its nature as one of the priciest, fastest, rarest super cars in existence, a Porsche 918 Spyder involved in any kind of incident will make headlines. But when one burns to the ground in a Canadian gas station, well, that goes viral.

The 893 hp hybrid hyper car is reportedly owned by Michael Werkerle, the CEO of investment firm Difference Capital and star of CBC's Dragon's Den (Canada's equivalent of Shark Tank). Witnesses state that gas spilled during the car's refueling in a Toronto gas station and ignited via the twin exhaust pipes. Those pipes protrude upwards from the engine compartment, rather than exiting out back like most other vehicles. The near-$900,000 Porsche was captured engulfed in flames by various onlookers with their cell phones. According to AutoGuide, Porsche of Canada is aware of the incident and will provide technical resources to those investigating, but as of yet does not know what occurred. Porsche has dealt with its fair share of fire-related incidents of late, as it recalled all its 911 GT3s due to engine fires in February.

Fortunately all involved in this blaze are said to be unharmed, although Werkerle's 918 Spyder is toast. May we suggest the Dragon's Den star's next move involves investing in an insurance company. (Just not the one footing this bill.)

It’s 0-60 time must be way below 4 seconds.

2.2 seconds, according to Car and Driver.

It also has an electric mode (129 hp on the front axle, 156 on the rear), in which it does 0 to 60 in 6.7 seconds.

I think one side is for gas and the other is for electric recharging but if you look at the left edge of this photo you can see the gas cap and how close it is to those hot exhausts.

I had a 57 bug. engine in the rear, gas tank under the hood in the front. No problemo.

I don’t even let gas drip a few drops on my 7 year old hatchback. Just how careless do you have to be to go splashing significant amounts of fuel *up* onto the rear deck? I guess when you can afford nearly 900k of car you don’t care about the paint?

Porsche forgot to put in a rear-deck machine gun.

I’ve got an older 996 Carrera that I once did 179 in.....paid 30k for it when it was 6 years old

My third 911.....I’m old.....

Never heard of a 918....till now

I hear it does 214 for 845,000

Those extra 36 mph top speed cost 23,000 bucks per mile....pretty fancy

I run top top speed...max...179

At 300 ponys and 3000 pounds

I would think at almost 900 ponies it would do over 214?

But it weighs....3700 pounds

Bet those big batteries lit up....was it the fancy model...named after the town

My brother had a Lingenfelter ZR1 supercharged....213 mph dyno....around 625 rear wheel bhp

They do plenty Camaro and Corvette after markets at 800-1000 bhp

By their standards 900 bhp ain’t overpowered trust me

I think their record is a twin turbo alcohol monster at 1600 bhp flywheel that does 0-60 in about 1.35 sec

Expensive 100,0000-250,0000 plus but cheaper than a Porsche like this one

I walked the plant....they had a cherry red new Edelbrock 500 horse 350 CID motor just sitting on a stand...like a statue.....fit in any mid size vehicle more or less.....16,000 bucks

That little spot in NE Indiana is Nirvana for American speed

I think Bugatti makes a 1200 horse ride too.....

$900,000 and they can't get the exhaust pipes right!

What’s needed is a boutique upper class gas station for such as these inside out platinum porcupine passenger cars ..... Thus a station equipped with a UV/IR flame detector would have activated a deluge system to save that poor pampered Porsche ........ Just my opinion of course.

....:o)

The incompetence here is by the person doing the refueling, not engineers.
I have refueled jets and small aircraft with hot engines below the wing without burning any of them to the ground.
Don’t blame the designers of the gun for the misuse by the person with their finger on the trigger.
