The Journalists’ Guide to Guns (How Not to Look Like an Idiot When Writing About Firearms)
thefirearmblog.com ^ | 9/29/2014 | Steve Johnson

Journalists. Bless their hearts. As a rule of thumb, any time we read a news story about a subject or incident we already know a lot about, it turns out that about 25% of what’s reported is simply wrong.

This is why knowledgeable gun owners distrust many news stories involving guns: because too many “journalists” display an ignorance of firearms that would be laughable if it weren’t so appalling. If they can’t get their facts straight about gun technology and shooting, then we don’t trust them on much else.

For over 24 years as a patent attorney, I’ve taken pride in my ability to explain stuff effectively. I’m known as “The Firearms Patent Attorney” because I represent more firearms companies than any other patent attorney or law firm in the world (by a wide margin). That means I spend lots of time explaining how guns work. And I have to keep it simple because I’m not just writing for specialized patent examiners, but for juries and judges, in case there’s ever a lawsuit.

The best compliment I ever get from inventors about a patent application is “Wow! You really understand my invention!” So maybe if I’m good at making gun tech understandable, I might be the right guy to help out the technically-illiterate journalists. Here we go:

I would rather not educate liberal opinion piece writers regarding guns.

Exactly. Why take away a source of entertainment for Sportute girl.

A clip is not a magazine, nor is a mag a clip;
Neither is a grip a stock, and "stock" does not mean grip.
I do not mean to nitpick, but improvement could be seen,
If we could bring ourselves to say exactly what we mean.

The HiPoint, of course, because it is the bigger of the two.

Size does matter, you know.

It looks mean as crap. (Cheap price and never a failure.)

And if you run out of ammo, you can club someone to death with the thing without fear of breaking it. I have a Hi-Point.40 cal and can do the same thing; the bad guy just needs to stand a bit closer is all.

Those 22 caliber bullets are much smaller caliber than 30 caliber (0.300 inch diameter) hunting bullets.

ERROR - "30 caliber" bullets are typically either .308 or .310 inches in diameter. The only rifle bullet I know of that is .300 inches in diameter is the 7.35mm Carcano round. (And if anyone has a good source for 7.35 Carcano bullets please advise.)

I saw it in the comments. Shoulda told him by blindly swallowing what some so-called ‘authority figure’ tells him removes him from being a [so-called] journalist and reduces him to the rank of unpaid prostitute!

I think that they pride themselves on not knowing, they think that it burnishes their anti-Second Amendment cred.

Hornady will be making another production run in the relatively near future. In the meantime, you can get complete rounds: http://www.ammo-one.com/735MMCAR.html

I painted the barrel tip of my AK orange. Now when I carry it around downtown everyone smiles and waves.

Most AK’s have a removable muzzle brake (reverse thread).

Paint one orange & install it whenever you want to OC near hospitals or schools.

(Sarc tag deemed necessary)

[ Oh yeah, any rifle that is black is an “assault rifle”.

That’s why mine is “Hello Kitty”. I can shoot even a member of the protected criminal class in my home and not worry about prosecution. My AR is cute, not scary, and it doesn’t have a bayonet lug or even a grenade launcher. ]

I call my pink rifle “The Jebster” becasue it is not an “Assault Rifle” because it is Pink and it is an “Act of Love” self defense weapon because I love my own life.
