Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall is offended by a new campaign ad aired by his opponent, Republican Rep. Cory Gardner, in which Gardner calls him a very nice guy.
Of course, Gardner goes on to say that despite his likeability, Udall will never change the Senate because of the deep roots his family has there. He is the Senate, Gardner says. Two of Udalls cousins are senators (Tom Udall from New Mexico and Mike Lee from Utah) and that Udalls father, Morris Mo Udall, who was a respected longtime congressman, once ran for president.
Udall wasted no time calling the ad low and saying Gardner had crossed a line by bringing family into politics.
This race should be about who can better represent the great state of Colorado, not personal attacks on our families, he said in a statement that was first reported by the Denver Post. So, to see Congressman Gardner decide to go after my late father and members of my family in a negative ad. Thats just low...
Gardners campaign fired back that Udall is too partisan to take a compliment.
This is rich, Gardner campaign manager Chris Hansen told the Post. For six months Sen. Udall has done nothing but wage the nastiest campaign in America and now he is upset that we are calling him a nice guy? Mark Udall has been in Washington for so long and is so partisan that he cant even take a compliment when it comes from the other party.
As a sign of the bipartisan respect Mo Udall earned during his tenure, Arizona Sen. John McCain said recently that he wouldnt campaign in Colorado on Gardners behalf because of his close ties to the Udall family.

Good. We don’t want McCain here and Corey Gardner doesn’t want him, either. McCain would hurt Gardner’s campaign.
“Don’t talk about my commie family!”
Calling a Democrat a nice guy could forever sully them with their base. No wonder he’s so mad.
Okay, he probably is a nice guy. And he unquestionably is a member of a very prominent Western political family. What’s he complaining about?
(heh heh) Insult Mark Udall? Moi?
He’s worried the nice guy will finish last. ;-D
Okay, you're an a*****e.
Okay, you’re an a*****e.

Are you addressing your comment to Sen. Mark Udall or me?
McCain just proved he thinks more of his “political friends” than he does his country. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Arizona will get what it deserves for giving us this piece of chit.
Udall.
He proved that back in 2008 when he served as a ringer for his good friend Zero.
I didn’t know Mike Lee was Udall’s cousin. Interesting....
Mike Lee’s father, the late Rex Lee (who served as Solicitor-General under Reagan), was first cousin to Mo & Stewart Udall (the fathers of Sens. Tom & Mark). Ex-Sen. Gordon Smith of Oregon was also a cousin of the Udalls (through his mother).
crossed a line by bringing family into politics.
Hmmmm, did he say that in 08 when Sarah Palin’s children were being attacked? I don’t think I recall a word from him.
Yet when a Republican mentions adult family members that is going too far?
He IS the senate... sounds like Truth to me.
I think Mike Lee is actually a second cousin. We could use more cousins like him and unlike most of the Udall clan.
“Yet when a Republican mentions adult family members that is going too far?”
Not just adults, but high-level politicians. They are certainly fair game.
