According to Indonesian news portal Detik, existing Windows 8 users will be able to upgrade to Microsoft’s next operating system absolutely free of cost. And how exactly do they know this, you ask? Well, Microsoft Indonesia president Andreas Diantoro said so in Jakarta Thursday...

I don't know how reliable this is, but it would be great news for Microsoft and for their users, if true.

I for one skipped Windows 8, but might give Windows 9 a look if they've actually learned their lesson. I won't get it for free, but if it's worth it I'll consider it for my Windows systems.

I hope it is true, I went from and old XP desktop to an 8.1 laptop, and like it fine once I googled the adjustments I wanted during the first few days, but I would like to get the newer system for free rather than think that mine went old so quickly.

Unless it’s a formally verified OS, I’m fine w/ 7.

By the way, the hardest kind of inaccurate public release to get back into the bottle, is one about a low price that you have told the customers.

Once a low price (or free) is seen, it cannot be unseen.

Thanks for the update. I have a Win8.1 machine that I'll be upgrading when it becomes available regardless of cost, but it would be awfully nice if it were free.

I think that Win8.1 is at least livable for a private user, but I couldn't run my work setup under it. That's a real problem, because by definition an OS that is less capable is not an improvement even if it is more capable in ways you don't use. Microsoft hoped to make the datapad users swoon and drag the rest of us along into that world. It was an ill-considered bet, and they've paid for it.

Nothing is free Mr. Diantoro. Nothing. Sometime, somewhere somebody pays.

If users don’t pay with money, they’ll pay in terms of privacy, or inconvenience, or more advanced data mining...something.

My computer is 3 years old and I’m running Win7. I’m happy with it. I’ve never tried Win8 but I’ve heard the horror stories.

0bozocare has taught us to be afraid of anything said to be “free”.

The odd releases generally works OK. Never touch the even ones.

8 bad
7 good
Vista bad
XP good
ME bad
98 Second edition good
98 bad
95 good
3.5 bad
3.1 good
3.0 bad

I have 8.1 and everything from previous versions is there. You just have to locate it. Once you do so, then you can arrange access to programs, settings and controls any way you want. All the wailing and gnashing of teeth about 8.1 is because people are too lazy to put a little work to learn where everything is located.

My wife’s desktop has 8.1 on it. I think she would be thrilled to have Windows 9, so it would be more like Windows 7.

My mama taught me TANSTAFL when I was knee-high. I was among those who saw Kommander Koffee Kup a thousand miles off. And yea - Øbozocare is a perfect example!
