Microsoft Exec: Windows 9 to be Free for Windows 8 Users
Microsoft has scheduled a special invite-only event for Tuesday, September 30, 2014, where it is widely expected to introduce the next version of its popular desktop operating system (codenamed Threshold but popularly referred to as Windows 9)...
According to Indonesian news portal Detik, existing Windows 8 users will be able to upgrade to Microsofts next operating system absolutely free of cost. And how exactly do they know this, you ask? Well, Microsoft Indonesia president Andreas Diantoro said so in Jakarta Thursday...

I was hoping one of you computer guys would define it.
“Don’t panic! The end of mainstream support doesn’t mean the end of Windows 7”
Just remember: odd-numbered Windows releases, even-numbered Star Trek movies and you’ll be fine.
CC
> Good lord I hope not. But maybe we should define "support"...
According to this from Microsoft: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle
Windows 7 mainstream support ends January 13, 2015, as you said. But extended support lasts until Jan 14, 2020. As we all know from the XP saga, extended support is fine for most users, right up to the bitter end.
Microsoft has not yet announced "end of sales" for Windows 7 pre-installed, and they give at least a full year of advance notice. So we can expect that Windows 7 will still be available pre-installed until this time next year (Sept 2015) at the earliest. Obviously they're not very worried about "mainstream" support at that point.
Right (see my comment directly above).
Your list was a good start, but you mixed the DOS-based release family with the NT-base release family; and in the NT family, forgot NT-3.1. NT-3.5, NT-4, and NT-5 (Win 2000).
I like W-7 also. I may never upgrade. OS is just a tool.
I do not upgrade my wrench or hammer every year either.
As long it runs my programs without crashing, no need to change.
So true. One almost wonders whether this odd news from far outside the U.S. is meant to cause trouble.
We'll know shortly -- Microsoft USA will have to address this soon.
You've only got until Jan 2020. At that point MS pulls "extended support" away and you're in FYBYOYO (fib-yo-yo) mode.
FYBYOYO is "F*** You, Buddy, You're On Your Own".
You'll have until Jan 2020 for Win 7 extended support, then Bye-Bye Birdie.
There are plenty of $150.00 and $200.00 computers out their with Windows 7, as long as the system is going to be around for a while, then they would be a better backup than the old XPs that we saved.
YOU DON'T??!!??
But don't you realize, you're missing out on all the latest advances in wrench and hammer technology, OSHA safety features, warning notices about wearing goggles, legal disclaimers in case you use your wrench as a hammer, not to mention the all-new "Claw-Wrench" and "Crescent-Hammer" hybrid tools.
You obviously haven't visited your local Harbor Freight Company store recently... :)
LOL!
I would love to move from Windows 8 that was on my new computer to hopefully-——something better.
Windows 8 is a bummer.
I did the same — really like XP.
Upgraded some of windows 8, but it doesn’t sound like it was as much as you did.
I write all my own programs. That is what I use the computer for. To improve my productivity by a factor of 1000 or more.
I could not care less what OS is on the computer. That is not my tool. My tool is my own software which I code in dBase5. That is a very old programming language (in computer age scale) but I know it inside out and can write very efficient programs quickly. So long as the dBase compiler works, it matters little if I am on Windows XP or Vista or W-7.
By the way Vista was crashing with regularity with the dreaded blue screen. W-7 has not crashed even one time in 4-5 months.
But most computer users can not write 1 line of their own program code. So let them upgrade OS’s and think they are really gaining something hahahaha...
I like 8.1, I never saw Windows 8.
You can upgrade to 8.1 for free, and I hope you did.
Yes, I did. But some of the disorganization, lack of alphabetization for the favorites irks me.
I wonder how many here remember how pathetic the first version of XP was, it took a long time for it to become what people remember so fondly.
I bought Windows 8 for $40 and tried it on my laptop. I took it off after a short time. If they do indeed offer FREE upgrade to Windows 9 then I will try it as long as it is a separate install. A clean install.
The makers of computers must really love Microsoft. Microsoft came out with a OS that 98% of the people hated and ignores most of the complaints and releases 8.1 which only added to the insult to users. How many billions of losses occurred?
Now they are releasing an OS that will not be out till April 2015 so anyone wanting to buy a pc will want to wait and skip Christmas which is any stores biggest holiday for sales.
Microsoft made it difficult to get version 8.1. It was only a download which you cannot save but only use to upgrade. It was approx. 3.6gb in size which is huge. How big will Windows 9 upgrade be?
Have trouble in the future? You may need to install version 8 first then download the upgrade after.
This is what is needed with version 8 to version 8.1. You cannot download 8.1 ISO (cd equivalent) as Microsoft will not accept your version 8 license. There are workarounds but most people will not know to do them.
> I wonder how many here remember how pathetic the first version of XP was, it took a long time for it to become what people remember so fondly.
I sure do. I stuck with Win 2K for a couple of years until XP didn’t suck as badly. Even Win98 was better in some respects than early XP.
