I’m guessing he was ordered to try and placate them from someone above him from a position of safety.I'd agree.
Then, he thought he would march 'with' the protestors to show his 'concern', and the protestors did what Obama told them to do. GET IN THEIR FACE. That's why the Armed officers had to intervene.

He should have either refused, or done it in such a way as to make it clear that he was under duress.OH, like the powers that be will just ignore his non-cooperation. Let's put it this way. I wouldn't want to be in his shoes.
