Flights at both Chicago airports have been halted Friday morning, due to a fire at Federal Aviation Administration radar facility in Aurora. Emergency crews found a man with self-inflicted wounds while putting out the fire.
A ground stop was in place at OHare International and Midway International airports as a result of the fire. Flights headed into both airports were being diverted to other airports, while flights departing the airports were being delayed.
The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said fire investigators were at the scene, as part of the DuPage County Fire Investigation task force.
Aurora spokesman Dan Ferrelli said, at about 5:45 a.m., firefighters and police officers responded to reports of a fire in the basement of the FAA Chicago Air Route Traffic Control Center at 619 Indian Trail Road.
Ferrelli said a man was found in the basement, suffering from self-inflicted wounds, though he had not been shot. The man was taken to an Aurora hospital for treatment. ATF spokesman Tom Ahern said the man suffered burns and self-inflicted knife wounds.

Lone wolf???
Emergency crews were called to a fire in the facility's basement around 5:40 a.m., according to Aurora Police Sgt. Dan Ferrelli, a department spokesman. They found a man there with "self-inflicted non-gunshot" wounds and transported him to a hospital, Ferrelli said.
The man is not an air traffic controller or FAA manager, according to an FAA source at the facility.
The source, who received a briefing from officials, said it appears the injured person is a contractor. "He is not a FAA employee,'' the source said.
A vehicle in the facility's parking lot that is believed to have been used by the man has been taped off by authorities, another source said.
As per usual, authorities wouldn't say if the fire was set.
Could be “Work Place Violence”??
Aviation ping.
Vandals at the gates. I’m pretty sure vandal was the word for terrorist in the last days of Rome.
The Gun Rights Policy Conference is going on there this weekend.
It said that he had burns as well as stab wounds - sounds to me like possibly he intended to do a suicide bombing and it didn’t work, so then he tried to stab himself to death so he couldn’t be questioned.
I am so glad terrorists are occasionally, incompetent. :)
Where is John McLain (NYPD) when you need him
I.e. key card employee access/armed security guards at entry points/video surveillance/employees go thru a real background check/etc.
OK, everybody, close your eyes and repeat after me, “ISIS poses no threat to us on US soil.” There, feel better? Now, back to our regular programming. /s
We’ve been very lucky on that score! But I guess living in the 7th century sometimes clouds people’s judgment...
It almost has to be an inside job. Most likely a contractor that is somewhat trusted. Like a cleaner.
I have read that when the Vandals broke through the walls of ROME, the citizens were at the coliseum watching a gladiator fight.
When the moslems break down the walls of the USA will the American people be watching some insipid show on TV?
I know nothing about this particular airport. but I did visit another major airport for work.
In the instructions for getting to the office were the words “go through the hole in the fence”. We ended up beside an airplane within about 3 minutes with our escort. Our IDs were never checked and our bags were never searched.
