Even as women in parts of the Arab world fight the prohibition against their driving a car on public roads, one extraordinary Arab woman is driving an F-16 in the fight against Islamic State terrorism.

Fox News confirms that 35-year-old Major Mariam Al Mansouri — the first female air force pilot from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) — has taken part in U.S.-led attacks on ISIS targets in Iraq in Syria this week.

Of course individuals deviate from the general population within a standard range. It’s a mistake to automatically attribute general qualities of the group to an individual (racism). But it’s also just as much a fallacy to pretend that those general attributes don’t exist, when statistically it has been shown that they do.

Major Mariam Al Mansouri is undoubtedly a better fighter pilot than I could ever be. But I would maintain that I would make a better fighter pilot than the vast majority of the female population. Danica Patrick is a better stock car driver than I would ever be, but again, I would make a better stock car driver than the vast majority of the female population.

My point was the basis for the general reason there are not more women fighter pilots. Or for that matter, why women generally do not do as well as men in endeavors that rely upon the ability to use spatial and motion judgment.

What!

A female Muslim combat pilot. WTH Freepers, women in combat suck. They should not be allowed to do what she does!

Until they get shot down and captured.

Just because the statistically average male has better spacial skills than the statistically average female does not mean some women are better at it than some men. It also does not mean some women are good enough at it to be fighter pilots. Statistics work on populations, not individuals. My sister flew fighters in the USMC and did a darn good job at it. Now she is an instructor pilot so apparently they were satisfied with her skills.

Female accidents are more often due to mishandling the airplane, whereas male crashes are more often due to taking stupid risks. Overall, male pilots are more likely to be involved in fatal crashes

I am pretty sure those statements hold true for car wrecks as well. (assuming you discount drinking and texting)

I’m a little behind the information curve on this subject.

Have any of our female “fighter” pilots actually shot down an enemy aircraft in air-to-air combat yet?

“Women will never be looked at as “equals”. If they were, a big deal wouldn’t be made EVERY TIME one of them does something that was historically reserved for a man.”

I have to agree with you there. Just look at the historical mess the world is in due to male reservation.

They are not near as backwards as much of the Islamic world.

Then again, maybe they are ...

I didn’t mean to suggest every single individual in the country was to a high standard.

As a nation, compared to the other Islamic nations, they are near the top. Still an Islamic nation so near the bottom of the full stack, but far better than most of their neighbors.

Big fish in a little, scummy pond.

I had a neighbor whose daughter and son-in-law had a good gig with ARAMCO in Iran in the late 1960s when the Shah was in charge. They told me about how strict it was about booze and women driving even for the expats like them living in ARAMCO’s compound. Then, when traveling by plane out of Iran, as soon as clearing Iran airspace, the booze started to flow and the party was on - and I’m talking about the Iranians on board.

I have never been in that part of the world but I suspect much of the populace hate living under the strict Islamist rule of the tyrants currently in charge. The family of this female pilot must have been in fear for their lives that caused them to disown her.

I worked in Yemen Oilfields during 93~94. Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the UAE were like Oasis compared to the desert of countries around them.

For much of the population, it is all they know. Internet access is such a life changing event for many.

I had a clerk back then ask me if snow was real or just a joke we had made up.

But UAE was a modern place that I would take my family prior to 9/11/2001; even found a good Tex-Mex restaurant run by a Texas ExPat. Today’s world, that would be not be an easy choice; fortunately oil/gas is good in the US these days.
