Even as women in parts of the Arab world fight the prohibition against their driving a car on public roads, one extraordinary Arab woman is driving an F-16 in the fight against Islamic State terrorism.

Fox News confirms that 35-year-old Major Mariam Al Mansouri — the first female air force pilot from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) — has taken part in U.S.-led attacks on ISIS targets in Iraq in Syria this week.

If she made the grade why not? I see no problem with women being fighter pilots at all.

Abu Dhabi: The first Emirati female pilot to serve in the UAE Air Force (UAEAF) said she is deeply honoured to be selected as a winner of the Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Government Excellence Award.

The recognition comes after a long road of dedication to her studies and adhering to a dream to someday soar high above the clouds whilst serving her country among the ranks of thousands of military personnel in the air force.

” If she made the grade why not?”

That’s what feminism should be about - not lowering standards or worse dual standards.

A common knock against women as either fighter pilots or race car drivers is that they lack the sense of spatial and movement awareness that men have. Men have a better innate sense of their own speed and vector, and can track another object and instinctively track it’s speed and vector, and instantly compute that track of the two objects and predict where they will be. Men also can instantly compute changes in future course based on changes in the speed or vector of either themselves or the other object. These are really good skills to have if you are racing an F1 car or flying an F16.

These were necessary skills genetically imprinted back in the old hunter-gatherer days, and honed in centuries of physical competition like sports and combat. Women historically did not have to hone these skills, and thus generally don’t have them to the same degree.

That's it, “If she made the grade . . .” and you know the UAE absolutely didn't change the standard a bit for a woman. This is a real slap in the face to the Iz Lame Fundies and I'm wondering how high on the ISIS list of targets the UAE just made themselves.

ISIS is in the way of the Saudis establishing their Wahabbist Caliphate, so of course the Saudis want to eliminate ISIS, they are their competition.

She's from the UAE. She can drive now. They are not near as backwards as much of the Islamic world. During past oil field projects we joked the UAE worshiped the US dollar more the the Koran.

they lack the sense of spatial and movement awareness that men have.

Since most target set-ups and analysis are done by computers or ground stations there is little need for that "hunter/gatherer" genetic factor. Better you can keep the 'blue side up' when required and not bend the metal on landing. Except in super market parking lots most women have that skill.

Women will never be looked at as “equals”. If they were, a big deal wouldn’t be made EVERY TIME one of them does something that was historically reserved for a man.

Which is it?

Women are weak and stupid and we are in shock and awe when one rises above their weaknesses.

OR

Women are every bit as capable as a man to achieve success with hard work, determination, and luck.

I say...big deal...woman pilot...been there, seen that. Hardly news.
