MOSCOW Russias Parliament passed a preliminary bill on Tuesday that would limit foreign ownership of Russian media outlets to 20 percent, targeting several prominent publications critical of the government and extending the Kremlins control over the nations independent news media.
The countrys top business daily, Vedomosti, the Russian edition of Forbes and dozens of other news, society and fashion magazines would fall under the purview of the bill, which would force the publications to change ownership or close by 2017.

Ours is not a “free press” nor is it domestically owned.
The Russian effort is for majority ownership (over 80%) domestically (but that does not translate to government owned).
France has laws that things must be in French.
We have foreign state media (Al Jazeera) being broadcast on taxpayer funded Pacifica radio stations.
I am cautious on the Russian proposal but know that what we have in America is sorely tainted “news”.
LOL, you really don’t want to let this news of Russian suppression of the press be discussed.
Discuss it all you want, I’m bringing up examples of how things are as bad and worse in our own country.
Have a list of the Russian controls of how they are restricting russian owned publishers from putting out news stories?
Think Conde Nast has US interests at heart?
FR cannot even criticize Conde Nast publications with links. They are on the Verbotten list.
To defend Russia, you hijacked the thread and attacked America.
You guys have been doing that since the 1920s, but you took a little break for a while, it looks like you are back, a whole new generation of Russian propagandists.
“You guys”. Im no commie, socialist, or anti-American.
You must not see my posts much on FR.
And no one else has picked up the gauntlet to discuss the main article. The thread is dead, not hijacked. Perhaps someone else posted a variation on it.
Pravda (non-USSR now) has been cited as a source by others (never me) on FR for years now.
How free do you believe America’s press to be?
Even Voice of America is anti-American in their broadcasts (even though we still fund them).
LOL, you really, really do not want this article about Russia discussed.
Troll.
Discuss the article and I will respond with no comparisons to the US. Deal?
So something is bad, you show up to say that something else is bad, too. I guess everything’s good. /s
Whataboutism is a term for the Tu quoque logical fallacy popularized by The Economist for describing the use of the fallacy by the Soviet Union in its dealings with the Western world during the Cold War. The tactic was used when criticisms were leveled at the Soviet Union, wherein the response would be "What about..." followed by the naming of an event in the Western world loosely similar to the original item of criticism. It represents a case of tu quoque or the appeal to hypocrisy, a logical fallacy which attempts to discredit the opponent's position by asserting the opponent's failure to act consistently in accordance with that position, without directly refuting or disproving the opponent's initial argument.
McCarthyism lives.
My God, you guys are going to resurrect that old leftist chant?
Why not, we anti-Communists have been hearing it from you for 60 years.
Putin's country huh? Screw the 140 million Russian people, huh? Amazing how you Putinista mind works.
....”Putin’s country huh? Screw the 140 million Russian people, huh?”.....
Sounds familiar doesn’t it?
There is a big difference between citizens being critical of media outlets and government shutting them down.
Putin and his gangsters running Russia want to protect their power and wealth, it is going to get a lot harder for the Russian people. Putin’s weak link is the Russian people there is always a possibility they could rise up and take back their country. So while he is robbing them blind, sending them off to kill and die, oppressing them and removing what little freedom they have he has to do so very carefully, so they don’t wake up in huge numbers suddenly and throw off their oppressors.
Yea Stalin comes to mind instantly.
