[MD] Montgomery confirms 29 recent cases of whooping cough, most involving schools

Montgomery County health officials said Tuesday they have confirmed 29 cases of whooping cough since an outbreak occurred during the first week of school.

Parents at a total of 12 Montgomery public schools have been advised of cases of the highly contagious illness, most recently at Briggs Chaney Middle School in Silver Spring and College Gardens Elementary School in Rockville, officials said.

Health officials said that increased awareness about whooping cough and more medical testing may be contributing to a continuing uptick in cases, which came to public attention after an outbreak was linked to a Pennsylvania summer camp in late August.

Whether other factors are involved is difficult to say until more epidemiological investigation is done, said Mary Anderson, spokeswoman for the county’s Department of Health and Human Services.

Five of the 29 recent cases do not include students or staff at schools, she said. In all, six cases involve adults older than 18.

The other Montgomery public schools with a recent confirmed case of whooping cough include Gaithersburg, Northwest, Sherwood, Thomas S. Wootton and Walter Johnson high schools; Cabin John, Julius West, Robert Frost and Rocky Hill middle schools; and Cold Spring Elementary School.

Yeah, last year I had a student come to school with whooping cough - diagnosed after school that day. Stood right in front of my desk!

I didn’t get sick, Thank God, too old and ornery, I guess.

Probably has a lot to do with idiot parents not vaccinating their kids.

Current outbreaks are occurring in vaccinated persons. But if it makes you feel better, you can continue to believe it only happens to the unvaccinated.

Another disease that was once eradicated, and brought back by illegals.

nonsense...if a vaccinated person does come down with a form of the disease, it is far less serious than a full fledged case of Whooping cough.

if you have something against vaccinations, so be it, but the multimillions of kids that did not contract Measles, mumps, whooping cough, scarlet fever, polio, don't think much of your opinion.

All my children are vaccinated. There are cases of whooping cough among vaccinated children at our school. I don’t know how severe each case has been. But the cases are certainly not nonsense and are very much serious.

It’s not fair that a certain demographic have it. We must spread it around for everyone. Just like we’re doing for EV-68 and ebola.

The strain the vaccine covers is not the same strain that is circulating. The vaccine offers no coverage against the new strain.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2013/02/08/whooping-cough-may-be-becoming-resistant-to-vaccines/1903439/

If you are infected with the new strain, it won’t matter how many doses or how recently you’ve had a TDap or DTap shot. Much like penicillin resistant bacteria, the new bug will just laugh at you.

“Our results underline the importance of Ptx in transmission, suggest that vaccination may select for increased virulence, and indicate ways to control pertussis more effectively.”

Oh now you stepped in it. There are some virulently [pun intended] angry Freepers who are going to condemn you to hell and all that nonsense because they are full on conspiracy nuts when it comes to vaccinations. One freeper, in particular I won’t call out by name, sent me some of the most angry condemnations you can imagine. But you’ll probably get the notes from this person I’m sure.

No doubt these outbreaks are related to the influx of non-vaccinated illegals. And there is a reason why Obama won’t release where he is sending these people. But do we really need to be told where they’ve been sent? Just connect the dots to these outbreaks and you’ll know where the kids were sent to.
