Performance pay tax increase paid to nearly all Denver teachers

Nearly a decade ago, voters approved a $25 million annual property tax increase for Denver Public Schools to fund performance and retention pay for teachers who help students learn.

But now, 90 percent of eligible DPS teachers are receiving the additional compensation, according to a database obtained by Watchdog.org under state open records laws. And that’s in a district where this year 22 percent of teachers were deemed as not achieving the “effective” teaching standard, DPS data shows.

Critics say the ProComp tax increase was always about collecting more tax revenue for the district than rewarding teachers who truly help students.

“It was sold to teachers in a different way than it was sold to the public,” said Mark Barlock, a former DPS teacher who led the fight against ProComp in 2005 and now teaches outside the district. “Teachers were told, ‘You understand this is how to get more taxpayer money for DPS, and we decide how to use the money we get.’”

...

The DPS database shows 90 percent of all eligible teachers will receive ProComp compensation this school year.

And some of the money is apparently going to teachers who can’t even meet the basic requirements of their job.

...

U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., who was DPS superintendent in 2005, has touted ProComp in speeches and his bio.

Nest door in Jefferson County, teachers are playing sick-out because the “nearly proficient” 7% aren’t getting raises.

...oh...and they’re upset that we object to their revisionist history in the text books and insist they get back to basics.

They just say it is Denver. Actually, it is Lake Woebegone West, where all the teachers performance reviews are above average.

Why on earth is anyone even surprised by this?

Unions are destructive. Liberal legislators are prostitutes.

In combination, they are corruption incarnate.

Idiots. Chumps. The people who voted for this deserve to be fleeced. Unfortunately the people who voted against it get stuck with it too.

We have had several tax increases at the district and state level for the schools and it is never enough. And they pretend that the previous year’s increase never happened — always doom and gloom if we don’t pass the ballot issue.

Also, teachers had a “sick out” last Friday because of the new, more conservative, school board who are trying to get things under control.

Teachers were complaining about the >possibility< of a more traditional presentation of American History and maybe the cap on salaries at $85K. I think that it was more a show of force and power than anything.

Anyway, we weren’t very happy that my son lost a day of school. My son was happy, though.
