I know there's a lot of anger about this on FR. But maybe this article on the actual role of the military will help alleviate some concerns.

Ebola needs to be stopped and stopped now. Letting it spread, giving it that much more opportunity to mutate, letting it eventually come to America and fighting it on our shores is insane.

This is NOT the role of the U.S. military. Assemble a group on contractors, paid for by the U.N. Why doesn’t Obama say “broad coalition” or “we cannot fight this alone” when it comes to Ebola? He uses that terminology for ISIS but not for Ebola?

This is not okay. These guys get no choice whether they want to go. They are being forced to.

Should be voluntary. The only reason this is happening is for Oboingo’s legacy.

You can “fight” Ebola all you want in Africa. As long as we’re going to open our borders as Obama has done, bring people to this country who are infected with Ebola and issue visas to thousands of foreigners to come here from infected countries, Ebola is going to get here. I’m afraid it’s already here and the epidemic hasn’t started yet. Ebola is funny like that.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Prevention is better than cure.

I suspect the military sent to fight Ebola is intended to capture it and bring it home where it will be given refugee status and disseminated throughout the country.

Let Obama be in front, leading the Troops.

No, he leads from / with his behind.

I agree it should be voluntary. I’m sure they could find 3000 volunteers.

But they are still in the selection process. We don’t know that it’s not going to be voluntary.

I’ve not been angry about this, but I have held my tongue on Free Republic. I work intimately with a major health agency, and there are Liaison officers attached to it, that are military. They are called the Commissioned Corps. I would expect it would be people like this — Infectious Agent specialists, medical and research doctors, and the support personnel that would surround them, that would be sent.

Actually this is well within what the Army does.

The United States Army has been involved in every Ebola outbreak since the first one in 1976, the Army has always been a leader in fighting, curing, and researching infectious diseases.
