A newly-formed coalition of African-American Democrats announced Wednesday they will not back any candidate that has exhibited disrespect for the black community on issues such as education, jobs and racial profiling.
Headed by St. Louis County Chairwoman Hazel Erby, D-1st District, the coalition named for the late Mississippi civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer pointedly withheld support for Steve Stenger, the Democratic candidate seeking the County Executive post in the November general election.
Erby hedged when asked if the coalition would instead stand behind Republican state Rep. Rick Stream or put forth the name of a write-in candidate in November.
We are exploring our options, she told a Wednesday morning press conference at Berkeley City Hall.
Berkeley Mayor Theodore Hoskins was not as circumspect.
Steve Stenger does not have the best interests of our community, he said.
Flanked by 35 mayors, council members representing several North County municipalities and state representatives, Erby emphasized that the coalition does not plan to single out a specific public official in the November election and beyond.

I find the substitution of the word for a common tool in lieu of a word for an interrogatory to be especially grating.
“In this country, you are an American first and foremost.”
Had this discussion with an American of African descent a few years ago. He was one of the most conservative voices in these parts, writing letters to the editor frequently and sending the progressives into a frenzy. He referred to “his people” and used the term African American. I pointed out to him that ethnicity should never go before nationality ... that only leads to further division.
He agreed and referred to himself as an American of African descent thereafter. He died last year and I miss our talks.
Respect is earned not given to people that lobby for it. I suggest that if this group really wants respect then they should work towards earning it. There are many black individuals that have earned my respect and that does not include the race baiters.
As long as blacks vote 90% Democrat, they will not have the respect of either party.
Its not.
Simply paying taxes and not receiving govt handouts” would be my voting criteria
That's very interesting. Maybe the the GOPe should use the info to target lefties for de-motivating them to go vote.
It appears the Black Tribe is planning on squeezing more juice out of the rest of America.
Bunch of racists. As long as these politicians identify themselves and policies by the color of the skin, they will remain racists.
And if a politician exhibited "disrespect" for the white, yellow, red or brown communities, that's ok.
Ebonics is at it again!
Black causes suck. It is racist to have causes for any “color”. Did I forget to say “Black causes suck”?
Blacks have to find something respectful to promote to have a respected black cause.
What black causes?
Have they considered at all why they might be “disrespected “?
Authority is DELEGATED
Responsibility is ASSUMED
BTW, Disrespect is also EARNED!
Tyranny makes DEMANDS
"African-American Democrats" would better serve their demographic if they spent less time protesting/demanding and more time studying Kipling's "IF".
PANTS UP! DON’T BREED!
As is disrespect.
