Washington (AFP) - Training and equipping moderate Syrian rebels to fight Islamic State extremists will take months, the White House warned Friday a day after Congress approved the plan.
"We will move out as rapidly as can be done, in partnership with the countries that will host the training facilities," said Susan Rice, national security advisor to President Barack Obama.
"This will be a process that takes months," she said, adding it will not "happen overnight."
"This is a serious training program, and we are serious about vetting those that we will be training and equipping," Rice emphasized.
"It is not something that one should expect will yield rapid and immediate fruit," she said, though she did not giving a specific timeline.

Pay them a bounty for every ISIS head they deliver.
Those rebels won’t fight ISIS - they will take the arms the U.S. supplies and go back to fighting Assad.
This notion of moderate Syrian rebels, properly vetted, is one of the dumbest ideas to ever come out of DC, for many reasons. And how many more innocents will be brutally murdered or displaced by the Islamic State while all these vetted moderates are being trained?
All this sounds like one big charade and staling tactic to get past the November elections while pretending to do something, and then it will continue on until Obama is out of office, still blaming it all on Bush.
I don’t think Obama intends to do anything effective to help defeat and destroy Islamic State.

we sent arms from libya to croatia and turkey to arm isis (the free syrian army).... why would any rational person expect positive results from a “quick train” fsa versus 10+ years of training the iraqi army..???

The strategy is to make it look like Obama is really doing something without actually causing too much damage to the new Caliphate.
Once he has the Syrian rebels armed they can oust Assad and ally with ISIS.
By then Obama will be leaving office and he can dump the mess on his successor - he doesn't care if it's Hillary or a republican .

In one year’s time, these 5,000 may turn against their hosts and join ISIS in an attack on the House of Saud.
