CURRENT half million cases???

Eeeee-bolllll-aaaaaa ping!

Bring Out Your Dead

We’re gonna need

a bigger cart!

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Which would you rather have? Which one would you have a better chance of surviving? Malaria or Ebola? Pick your poison.

I think the individual lethality ie percentage of survivors is what causes the freak out. JMHO

Other outbreaks happened in small villages which were easier to quarantine. This hit more populated areas and was not always identified correctly.

People who tested negative were released, but they actually had it and therefore spread it around. Not handled well. Inferior health system even for Africa. All of these have been mentioned in various articles I have read.

Ok. I still have my doubts. Not that that is CIA or anything crazy like this, but everyone has an interest in lying about it.

Former protocols for personal protective equipment have proven to be insufficient for nearly 200 individual health care workers, so apparently assumptions about how the virus spreads are incorrect, fatigued personnel had lapses in biosecurity, or other factors applied which led to their infection.

The best available evidence is that most of the doctors and nurses with Ebola got it during routine clinical visits, without realizing they were facing Ebola. They deliver a baby (or participate in a similar bloody but presumably low-risk procedure) wearing normal protective gear and contract Ebola because the mother was infected and they didn't dress for that risk or clean up properly after the delivery before moving on to the next patient.

The Ebola doctors and nurses usually attribute their infections to treating what they thought were other issues. Those who get infected despite knowing what they are treating are typically caring for ten times as many patients as is normal, even for Africa. It's no wonder those doctors make mistakes, given the fatigue and the demands on their time. The one issue I have with what they teach on the means of transmission is the oversimplification that "direct contact" is required. We know it can be indirect patient contact, and they should emphasize that contact with bodily fluids, even hours later when the patient is not present, can spread Ebola.
